Starring Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Joan Plowright, David Strathairn, Martin Short ... Review: 'Spiderwick' does a good job Feb 15, 2008
A midget-sized hulk voiced by Martin Short, Thimbletack can work himself into a green fury unless you sweeten his disposition with generous helpings of honey. Jared also gets some help from Hogsqueal, a bird-eating hobgoblin (voiced by Seth Rogen) who has sworn vengeance on Mulgarath and who'll spit in your eye to expose the ogre's invisible minions. (CNN -- Showbiz)
'Spiderwick Chronicles' a fast-paced beasties-run-amok tale Feb 15, 2008
Doesn't take long for Jared to ride a forgotten dumbwaiter to a secret room, uncloak a heretofore invisible, short-fused and diminutive creature named Thimbletack (Martin Short) and break the seal of and dive into the Book because a note tells him not to. DETAILS. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
'Spiderwick' doesn't stick, despite Highmore's performance Feb 14, 2008
Creatures include Hogsqueal, a hobgoblin who resembles a wild boar and is voiced by Seth Rogen; Thimbletack, the house brownie whose vocal stylings are courtesy of Martin Short; and Mulgarath, a manipulative ogre played by Nick Nolte. Spiderwick can entertain and engage, and the cinematography by Caleb Deschanel is stunning, but fantasy and reality fail to coexist comfortably. (USA Today -- Life)
'Spiderwick' spins humor and frights with classy care Feb 14, 2008
Some even live inside the house, such as the brownie Thimbletack, voiced by Martin Short, a diminutive and vaguely annoying little creature whose occasional angry outbursts can only be pacified by guzzling honey. Nearby is the hobgoblin Hobsqueal (Seth Rogen), whose duty it is to guide Jared through the rough-and-tumble to follow. (North County Times)
'Spiderwick Chronicles' Feb 14, 2008
Among them: a 9-inch house brownie named Thimbletack (voice of Martin Short) with a taste for honey, along with goblins, hobgoblins, ogres, griffins and beautiful flower sprites and sylphs. Through no fault of the movie or its special effects experts, I kept thinking of the Mucinex commercial when I saw the computer-generated green goblins, and a fearsome face-off veers awfully close to standard monster-movie fare. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)
Great green goblins! Feb 14, 2008
The discovery infuriates a tiny creature named Thimbletack (voiced by Martin Short) who'd been entrusted with the safety of the book for decades since the disappearance of its author (David Strathairn). Turns out the existence of the book had been hidden from the local evil entity, a powerful ogre named Mulgrath (voiced by Nick Nolte and played by him in his human incarnation, looking very much like Nolte's own real-life mug shot). (Winnipeg Sun)
Film review: Reality trumps fantasy in ‘Spiderwick Chronicles’ Feb 13, 2008

Spiderwick weaves a wondrous web Feb 13, 2008
If theres one element of the film that fails miserably, its the attempt at comic relief from Martin Short (as a honey-addicted house sprite) and Seth Rogen (as a hobgoblin who spits in the humans faces so that they can see the otherwise invisible creatures). Highmore, whose talents have been wasted in tripe like August Rush and the misbegotten Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, finally has a vehicle that deserves him, and he makes each twin Grace brother a separate and fully...
