Video reviews: Gory 'Freddy Vs. Jason' watchable  Jan 16, 2004
" Marci X Paramount. VHS-DVD. 83 min. Rated R. In stores Jan. 20. Grade: C- Marci X is its own worst enemy: Behind the bling bling is a lot of rust. On the surface, this farce starring Damon Wayans as a foul-mouthed rap star named Dr. S, and Lisa Kudrow as the ditzy socialite who tries to tame him, seems ripe for humor. When their worlds collide - ghetto fabulous versus Park Avenue - you expect cultural and romantic sparks to fly. She's trying to save Daddy's company from bankruptcy after Dr.... New releases  Jan 16, 2004
MARCI X (2003; Paramount; 84 minutes) The running theme through this film is, "You've got to be real." But there's nothing real about the characters in this dismal comedy that treats rap music as a windup toy. Even as a satire, it fails because the filmmakers don't understand the subject they're satirizing (Chicago Sun Times, IL)

Reel to reel  Jan 8, 2004
Marci X' ' Paramount dumped this comedy about a wealthy debutante (Lisa Kudrow) who helps shape the image of a gangsta rapper (Damon Wayans) into the theaters with hardly any advertising and no advance screening for critics. Fortunately for Kudrow and Wayans, this film disappeared from theaters faster than 'From Justin to Kelly,' so there probably weren't too many people who actually saw how bad this movie was (Bowling Green Daily News, KY)

Deep Inside Hollywood  Dec 9, 2003
Fresh off the triumph that was Marci X, powerful gay producer-bear Scott Rudin has set his sights on a film version of the forthcoming book Guests of the Ayatollah. Black Hawk Down scribe Mark Bowden will pen the screenplay, which focuses on the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, during which 52 Americans were held captive for 444 days, famously not-rescued by the Carter administration, and then released after Ronald Reagan took office (Windy city Media Group)

    Stereotype casting  Sep 27, 2003
" Taha acknowledges that many movies, such as Chris Rock's "Head of State" or the more recent box office bomb "Marci X," starring Damon Wayans as a rapper and Lisa Kudrow as a Jewish-American princess, use stereotypes for a laugh. But he worries that these caricatures are crowding out more balanced depictions, such as in "Deliver Us From Eva. " "Yeah, there's a little truth to stereotypes (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WI)
