'Madagascar 2’ is a cute family film  Nov 16, 2008
This movie is extremely reminiscent of Disney's "The Lion King." It focuses on the loss of the alpha line by Alex's family after his embarrassing performance and the scheming of an evil member of the pride who wants to take over, and is followed by their redemption by saving the jungle from famine and drought. However, it seems to lack the substance and timeless nature of "The Lion King." It becomes predictable and cheesy. (Fresno Bee -- Lifestyle)

    Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa  Nov 9, 2008
Finally, there's the significant resemblance that Madagascar 2 has to The Lion King, including an errant son (Alex) returning to the pride that he left long ago, a scheming usurper (Makunga) who conspires to take over as king, and the son's efforts to rescue his people after he sees that the despot has essentially destroyed his family's homeland. These comparisons may not matter much to younger viewers who know the Disney film primarily (if at all) on the strength of feel-good ditties like... (IGN FilmForce)

    'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa'  Nov 9, 2008
From there, "Escape 2 Africa" begins a serious poaching session on "Lion King" territory. Alex finds his parents -- the late Bernie Mac provides the voice of daddy Zuba, big mane on campus -- and with obvious allusions to Scar in "The Lion King," Alec Baldwin lends his sterling basso distrusto voice to jealous Makunga, a petty and venal lion indeed, who exploits naive, showbizzy Alex for his own political gain. (Los Angeles Times)

'Madagascar' another silly ride  Nov 8, 2008
The movie borrows almost as heavily from "The Lion King" as it does 2005's "Madagascar.". The intrepid, can-do penguins repair a plane to take themselves, the four Central Park Zoo critters Alex the lion (the voice of Ben Stiller), Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), Melman the hypochondriac giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Marty the Born Free zebra (Chris Rock) and the leading lemurs, King Julien and Maurice (Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric the Entertainer) "home" to New York. REVIEW: Find out if you'll go wild for 'Madagascar 2'  Nov 8, 2008
At times, the story and the setting, along with a few key characters, seem intended to conjure up Lion King associations ... Alec Baldwin plays the malevolent Makunga, whose manipulative character bears a strong resemblance to Lion King's conniving Scar. (USA Today -- Life)

    It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Madagascar 2  Nov 8, 2008
Reunited with his parents, Alex runs into a domestic bramble straight out of The Lion King: his father (voiced by the late Bernie Mac, whose Soul Men also opened today) is being challenged by the devious, Scar-like Makunga (Alec Baldwin). Manhattanite Alex must take the maturing journey from friendly stranger to source of family humiliation and finally to community savior the Yankee of the pride. (Time.com)

Review: 'Madagascar 2' Worthwhile Escape  Nov 7, 2008
The evil Makunga (slyly voiced by Alec Baldwin) is lifted right from "The Lion King." In his Scar-like way, he is trying to take over the crown of the Zuba, the Alpha Lion (voiced by the late Bernie Mac) and father to Alex, who went missing when he was just a cub. As fate would have it, Alex (Ben Stiller) has been dropped right back in the lap of his father and mother. (TheSanDiegoChannel.com, CA)

Madagascar 2: Shallow in the jungle  Nov 5, 2008
Most of the voice performances are merely adequate, although Baldwin has a field day playing what might be classified as Scar from The Lion King as filtered through Baldwins hilariously ruthless 30 Rock character. (The animators give Makunga very Baldwin-like facial expressions, and he winds up being the movies most interesting character. (MSNBC -- News)

PICTURES: State cross country: Union girls retain title  Nov 3, 2008
In order to help offset the nerves, Union took some advice from a movie and, no, it wasn t the track and field cult classic "Prefontaine." Disney s "Lion King" and its Swahili phrase of Hakuna matata (no worries) was just what the team needed. Relaxed and in control, Union s black jerseys congregated at the front of the pack as the Knights ran away with the team race to capture back-to-back Class 2A state championships by nearly 100 points Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. 'Blasted' and 'The Seagull' in New York: A somber look at human nature  Oct 28, 2008
Well, there's the usual fun to be had, in the form of standbys like "The Lion King" or last season's somewhat exhausting farce "Boeing Boeing." And "Billy Elliot" is warming up at the barre. But in a case of colossal bad timing, the most notable, the most accomplished - the most important - new productions of the fall theater season so far are as dark-hued as theater gets: Ian Rickson's existential take on "The Seagull" on Broadway and the shattering Sarah Kane play "Blasted" at Soho Rep. The notion that children's futures are foretold early in life has strong narrative appeal (consider the stories of Aladdin, the Lion King, and Harry Potter, who were all destined for greatness).
