-- Koyaanisqatsi (Nonesuch) - As sanctimonious and addlepated as Godfrey Reggio's 1982 movie is, Glass' orchestral score - the first of his many works for film - is a luminous, evocative masterpiece. -- Glassworks (Sony Classical) - Glass' commercial breakthrough recording from 1982, the first fruit of his contract with CBS Masterworks, offers a beautiful precis of his high-minimalist style. We're all gonna die  Sep 3, 2007
The quick cuts are dizzying at times, like Koyaanisqatsi without the visual poetry and New Age music score. The 11th Hour will require repeat viewings, especially on a future DVD, for full comprehension. (Edmonton Sun)

'The 11th Hour': Inconvenient truths on the environment that give breathing room for hope  Aug 18, 2007
Effectively blunt, this sequence provoked a colleague to invoke the name of the avant-garde giant Stan Brakhage, but the truer model here is a film like "Koyaanisqatsi," with its streaming global landscapes. The difference is that the images in "The 11th Hour" are pointedly horrifying, not reassuring, pacific or aestheticized. (International Herald Tribune)

The Hopi Native Americans word "koyaanisqatsi" or "life out of balance" describes "an unstable situation marked by testosterone-fueled wars, a plethora of misogynistic societies, and a growing disrespect for Mother Earth.". Perhaps a female perspective would redirect our priorities to those things that really matter. (The University Echo, TN)

    Listening Post  Jan 22, 2007
Unfortunately, though, that doesn't translate to this being one of Glass' better free-standing scores on the order of his music for "The Hours" or his extraordinary music for Godfrey Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi" or "Powaqqatsi." On its own, it sounds like minimalist background music for domestic conflict and depression and not a lot else. Review: 2 stars (J.S.). (Buffalo News -- Entertainment)

Rewind: Hollywood's Been Armageddon It Wrong For Years  May 23, 2006
While not a work of fiction, 1982's "Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance" has been interpreted by many to be a rumination on how our consumerist, technological society is going to be our downfall. Godfrey Reggio's impressionistic film consists mostly of time-lapse and slow-motion photography (set to a minimalist synth score by Philip Glass) of a world moving so fast that humanity can barely keep up. My husband recalls seeing "Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance," during his eco-hippie days in 1983 (shockingly, the same year I saw Return of the Jedi at age 5) at a now-defunct cinema in Portsmouth. My grandparents often came to Portsmouth from York for a night at the movies, as a young couple. (Seacoast New Hampshire)
