Exiles on Indie Street Jul 19, 2008
By the late '40s it had become a seductively seedy location for the film noir crowd: Act of Violence, Hollow Triumph, Night Has a Thousand Eyes, Criss Cross, Douglas Sirk's Shockproof, Joseph Losey's remake of M and Kiss Me Deadly were all filmed there. The 1999 L.A. Confidential went to Bunker Hill to capture the majestic sleaze of the city circa 1953, Now a Frank Gehry building, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, looms over the Indians' old stomping ground. Bunker Hill doesn't live here anymore Jul 13, 2008
In films like Robert Aldrich's 1955 noir classic, "Kiss Me Deadly," Douglas Sirk's 1949 "Shockproof" (where the hero shares a Bunker Hill Victorian with his mother), and Kent Mackenzie's independent 1961 gem, "The Exiles," Bunker Hill is a protagonist - scarred, battered, but vibrant. It is there, on the silver screen, that Bunker Hill lives on. (Boston Globe)

" Kelly wrote a few chapters of this imaginary tome, posted them on the film's Web site and later folded excerpts into the director's cut. "Southland" has even more extra-textual stuff. Early on, when comic book publishers proposed tie-ins, it occurred to Kelly that he could expand the narrative beyond his shooting budget. "I had this really elaborate back story inside me," he said. He decided to present the movie as Chapters 4, 5 and 6 and conceived of the first three chapters as graphic... (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

To understand America's post-World War II anxiety and paranoia, the place to look would be in film noir thrillers like "Panic in the Streets" and "Kiss Me Deadly," films ignored in favor of more conventional dramas in the best picture balloting. The Oscars tend to be referendums on the past, not portents of the future. (Los Angeles Times)

John Patterson: Let another director have a go Nov 11, 2006
As he did with Kiss Me Deadly, when he took Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer and portrayed him as the amoral fascist thug he really was, Aldrich would make us very uneasy about identifying with the emotionless Bond, a state-sponsored murderer masquerading as a hedonistic playboy. A call should go out to directors who actually want to make a new kind of Bond movie. (Guardian Unlimited -- Film)

One of my favourite maguffins appears in a little-known cult film from the '50s called 'Kiss Me Deadly. Based on the Mickey Spillane novel of the same name, it is a harsh, brutal thriller about a mysterious, glowing suitcase which contains something unknown but potentially very powerful (aficionados of 'Pulp Fiction' will remember Tarantinos affectionate reference to this maguffin in a scene involving Marcellus Wallaces briefcase).
