Nothing on the second Evening approaches the classic-story status of that Superman riff, but there's still plenty to entertain, if not necessarily enlighten, Smith's followers, including anecdotes about his 2004 flop Jersey Girl; some choice words about Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ ("I was taught to love Jesus, not expletive beat him up, so that movie I was just so, so not down with"); and shared moments onstage with actor Jason Mewes, who plays Jay to Smith's Silent Bob in several of... Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith ... Brian O'Halleron, Jeff Anderson, Rosario Dawson, Trevo Fehrman, Jennifer Schwalbach, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith ... Diehard Smith fans with fond memories will find things to enjoy: there are one or two delightfully tacky gags; the Star Wars v Lord of the Rings face-off is an inspired scene; it's good to see Jay (Jason Mewes) in fine uninhibited form; and the Jackson 5 rooftop dance number is appealing, in a high-school musical kind of way. It all adds up to a great third act and a satisfying ending that resolves everything well, even closing the movie on a Soul Asylum song, just to show that Smith hasn't gone too far away from his roots.
