"Get Smart" in theaters Jun 24, 2008
Blowing up a concert in Los Angeles where the President (James Caan, doing his best Dubya) will be in attendance. He plans to set off the bomb during Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." I appreciate the filmmakers use of "Ode to Joy" in both the trailer and the film itself, especially since it is used in the trailer format so much because it seems to work well against images of stuff getting blowed up real good. Get Smart: Clever comedy thriller Jun 23, 2008
The only miss in this regard is the casting of tough guy James Caan as a George W. Bush clone, which is both a bad match and a pointless parody. Bush jokes are just so 15 minutes ago. (Toronto Star)

Bill Murray, James Caan, Kevin Nealon, Heroes Masi Oka, ex-Raider Bill Romanowski and a multitude of others pop up. There are also a few prominently placed political jabs (CIA digs; President s pronunciation of nuclear), which give Get Smart an even higher IQ.. (Green Valley News & Sun, AZ)
Movie review: Get rewrite on 'Get Smart' Jun 21, 2008
James Caan shows up as the president, in the most pointed, nasty parody of George W. Bush to date (the kind of thing that happens only in a president's last year in office). But Carell is the only positive influence on the audience's experience of the movie. (San Francisco Chronicle)

'Get Smart' lacks intelligence of '60s TV series Jun 20, 2008
Just as many good actors are hung out to dry, though, including Dwayne Johnson (per the credits, no longer The Rock) as the smoothly capable Agent 23, James Caan as a US president who's a bigger idiot than Max, and Ken Davitian - Borat's portly foil - as Siegfried's henchman. Hathaway is game but misused, too, for the simple reason that the unspoken romantic tension that kept the TV series purring for so long is addressed too quickly here. (Boston Globe)
'Get Smart' Jun 20, 2008
Especially inept are attempts at up-to-the-minute political satire, including a painfully miscast James Caan as a president thuddingly modeled on George W. Bush. As to "Get Smart's" actual plot, it is nothing more than a knockoff of standard issue spy material centering on the concept that the TV show's rivalry between the evildoers of KAOS and the good guys from CONTROL continues to this day. (Los Angeles Times)
'Get Smart' retreads old ground Jun 20, 2008
Alan Arkin is warm yet irascible as the Chief, James Caan contributes a brief, entertaining turn as the president, and Bill Murray tosses off a goofy, underplayed cameo as ever-camouflaged Agent 13. With comic resources like this, "Get Smart" should have been a hoot, not just satisfactory. (Juneau Empire)
* [FILM REVIEW] Agent of reinvention (sorry about that, chief) Jun 20, 2008

Get Smart falls short in spying and spoofing Jun 20, 2008
There were certainly opportunities for Get Smart to give current events the same level of mockery that the old show applied to the Cold War theres a major plot point about yellowcake uranium, for goodness sakes but the best it can do is to give us James Caan as a dopey president who reads Goodnight Moon to a class of school children. A beloved character makes a last-minute appearance in the hopes of making the audience hanker for a sequel, but its too little, too late. (MSNBC -- Movies)
Steve Carell brings flair to formulaic 'Get Smart' Jun 20, 2008

Politically edgier, the new Get Smart mocks the President - Jun 20, 2008
As played by James Caan, the U.S. president is an easily amused simpleton who falls asleep at the symphony and, in general, suffers from the same borderline narcissistic personality disorder as the bumbling Max. He's just a lot less effective. (Globe and Mail)
99 Ways to 'Get Smart' Jun 18, 2008
James Caan also appears as a bumbling president of the U.S. who s under the thumb of his evil V.P.. There are also a couple of references to the old TV show: jovial Bernie Kopell, who played Siegfried, the head of KAOS in the series ( and known, alas, as Doc from "Love Boat") speeds by. (Fox News)

In it, a writer of romance novels, Paul Sheldon (James Caan), is held prisoner by a crazed fan, Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), and subjected to unspeakable tortures when he tries to escape - tortures far worse in the novel than the movie.
