'Changeling': Trying for greatness and achieving grandiosity  Oct 23, 2008
The year is 1935, and "It Happened One Night" is Christine's pick for best picture, but it's hard to avoid interpreting this moment as a none-too-subtle wink directed at present-day moviegoers and Academy voters. Christine begs off - she just has too much work - and it goes without saying that on Feb. 22, Angelina Jolie, who plays her, will have to make similar excuses. (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

Making sense of the AFI's 'Top 10 Films in 10 Genres' list  Jun 19, 2008
Frank Capra made great movies but "You Can't Take It With You" is much, much better than "It Happened One Night." And the Matrix is not on the sci-fi list ... How can It Happened One Night not be the best romantic comedy of all time ... (With the exception of "When Harry Met Sally" and "It Happened One Night" -- the latter being really fantastic, in my book). (Entertainment Weekly)

It Happened One Night (1934). It Happened One Night" was the first film to win the Academy Award grand slam of Best Picture, Best Actor (Clark Gable), Best Actress (Claudette Colbert), Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is a film that anyone with an interest in the history of filmmaking must see, for it is one of the first road trip movies and is considered by many film historians to be the first screwball comedy.2. 27 Dresses DVD Review  May 18, 2008
It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story, When Harry Met Sally, and Something s Gotta Give allhave two things in common with 27 Dresses: they re romantic comedies that follow the classic formula of boy meets/reunites with girl; boy and girl bicker/flirt; boy and girl fall in love but don t know it/won t admit it; boy and girl marry/remarry (although to be fair, It Happened One Night didn t so much follow as invent the formula). While 27 Dresses may not quite achieve the superiority of those... (Suite101.com)

Leatherheads’ fails as a homage film  Apr 18, 2008
And now, of course, we have Leatherheads, a movie that would like to be considered one of the screwball comedies of the 1940s, a reference to films like His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, and It Happened One Night. With the exception of Leatherheads, which just opened, these movies have more in common than just their stylistic tendencies none of them have made very much money. (Chippewa Falls Chippewa Herald, WI)

Make football, not war  Apr 10, 2008
Jennifer Lopez in "Out of Sight." Catherine Zeta-Jones in "Intolerable Cruelty." Julia Roberts in "Ocean's 11." His repartee with Zellweger is light and fun in a "His Girl Friday" meets "It Happened One Night" kind of way. (I enjoyed their train car scene. (Seacoast New Hampshire)

Throwback comedy 'Leatherheads' is a real winner  Apr 4, 2008
It's an amiable homage to such films as His Girl Friday and It Happened One Night, and, to director Clooney's credit, there are no obvious anachronisms. The production design, language and general attitudes stay faithful to the era. (USA Today -- Life)

Illegal Use of Hands  Apr 4, 2008
At this point in his career, he's earned the right to make a movie that's just OK. If Clooney's contemplating going retro again for his next project, may I suggest a remake of It Happened One Night. Reese Witherspoon would make a fine latter-day Claudette Colbert, and instead of just going bare-chested as Gable , Clooney could guarantee big box office by taking it all off. (Slate)

    "Leatherheads,"  Apr 4, 2008
He's happy to have the chance to reference pictures like "His Girl Friday" and "It Happened One Night," and he's clearly having a lot of fun revisiting, and refreshing, some of the things we've come to think of as clich;s. Actually, most of these conventions are so ancient, and so lost in today's movie vocabulary, that they no longer even qualify as clich;s: Dodge and Lexie -- who've only recently met and who, of course, have taken an instant dislike to one another -- find themselves sharing the... Clooneys 'Leatherheads' fumbles, fades, punts  Apr 3, 2008

    Wong Kar-wai's blueberry-pie America  Apr 3, 2008
Without those kinds of failures, maybe you don't get the other kind of American films made by foreigners, like, say, "It Happened One Night" and "Vertigo" and "Sunset Blvd.". I guess what I'm saying is that Wong Kar-wai has earned the right to jump off any cliff he damn well pleases. (Salon)

Sex symbols: the guys  Mar 30, 2008
Sexiest role: Peter Warne in It Happened One Night (1934). Quote: "Hell, if I'd jumped on all the dames I'm supposed to have jumped on, I'd have had no time to go fishing.". (Florida Times-Union)

Clooney drops the ball with "Leatherheads"  Mar 29, 2008
The journalistic aspects are all stolen from "The Front Page" and "It Happened One Night" and feel tired. The chases, fisticuffs and pratfalls are exceedingly lame. (Reuters)

Oscar Winners from the Late 1970s  Mar 28, 2008
Funny and sad by turns, the film doesn t always fire on all cylinders, but still became the first movie since It Happened One Night (1935) to win all five major Oscars best picture, lead actor and actress (Nicholson and Fletcher), best director (Milos Forman), and best screen adaptation. 1976 Best Picture: Rocky. 2008 Oscars Snub Comedy: Juno  Feb 26, 2008
In 1934 the film It Happened One Night, along with stars Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and director Frank Capra, all won Academy Awards. It wouldn t be until 1975 (One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest) and again in 1991 (The Silence of the Lambs) that a film would sweep the four major film awards. (Suite101.com)

The only discernible purpose of the best-picture montage Dana mentionsbeyond killing time that is already deadis to help people at Oscar parties bond as, reviewing the films of yesteryear, they gush (1934, It Happened One Night: "That's a great movie"), or scoff (2005, Crash: "Mwhh"), or quip (1947, Gentleman's Agreement: "Gregory Peck? Jewish?"), or reminisce about Quiz Show (1955: Marty), or reveal that they own copies of Gigi. At this point, it is too much to ask that the Oscars... (Slate)

    What's so funny?  Feb 26, 2008

Frank Piasecki, 88; pioneered the tandem-rotor helicopter  Feb 25, 2008
Many may recall the autogyro for its memorable appearance in two popular films of the early 1930s, "International House" with W.C. Fields and "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable. Piasecki was a 1940 aeronautical engineering graduate of New York University and that same year cofounded a company, P-V Engineering Forum, near Philadelphia. (Boston Globe)

Spark snuffed by hopeless romantics  Feb 15, 2008
The actresses are spunky and sweet, but lacking in the vinegar that made Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve or Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night so definitively sexy. The romantic comedy leading men of today are the kind of nice guy whom these earlier heroines would have triumphed by rejecting. (Sydney Morning Herald)

    The 800-lb. Golden Gorilla  Feb 15, 2008
The top Oscar has gone to a handful of comedies (including It Happened One Night and Annie Hall), but generally the Academy prefers to be edified. The year of Citizen Kane, 1941, was also the year of Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve, today regarded as one of the great American comedies, with Stanwyck and Henry Fonda brilliant as a cardsharp predator and her millionaire prey. (Time.com)

    * No love for the romantic comedy  Feb 1, 2008
The actresses are spunky and sweet, but lacking in the vinegar that made Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve or Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night so definitively sexy. Those ladies were not always nice, and neither were their gentleman counterparts, who could be sarcastic, brutish and domineering when the mood struck. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- Business)

September 16, 2007 -- IN Frank Capra's 1934 classic "It Happened One Night," hitchhiker Claudette Colbert famously hiked up her long shirt to score a ride. This being the 21st century, it takes more than a glimpse of stocking to do the same thing. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

The greatest romantic comedies, Denby asserts -- from It Happened One Night to Manhattan - rely on banter between the sexes that is "aggressive but not coarse, angry but not rancorous, silly but not shamed, melancholy but not ravaged.". Danes' star rises again  Aug 9, 2007
Pursued by a trio of witches led by a deliciously diabolical Michelle Pfeiffer and an evil prince impersonated by the glowering Mark Strong, Danes' Yvaine finds herself trading catty barbs on the road with the earnest but infuriating hero-to-be Tristan (Charlie Cox), a situation that suggests It Happened One Night by way of The Princess Bride. "It's really witty, and the dialogue is really clever and fresh and crackling," says Danes. (Toronto Star)

A star both astronomical and otherwise  Aug 6, 2007
"Stardust" wants to be "The Princess Bride" meets "The Lord of the Rings" by way of "It Happened One Night." The screenplay by Jane Goldman and the film's director, Matthew Vaughn ("Layer Cake") is faithful in spirit to Gaiman's charming fairy tale, but it narrows the story's focus while broadening its visual universe in a barrage of special effects. There is also one very odd, much talked about embellishment that involves Robert De Niro as captain of a flying pirate ship of lightning... (Boston Globe -- Living)

When I took Nora to a double feature of It Happened One Night and Holiday, the Capra was fresh as a daisy; the Philip Barry/George Cukor was still terrific--and would make a great remake--but it was very much a product of its time. (On the other hand The Philadelphia Story, with many of the same collaborators, is still perfect. (Variety)

To catch a glimpse of America in the tumultuous 1930s, when the nation's economy was in ruins, the best portrait of the times is from the comedies of the day, including "My Man Godfrey," "Twentieth Century" and "Easy Living," which capture the spirit of the age far better than the films awarded Oscar statuettes (though the academy did give best picture in 1934 to "It Happened One Night," a brash Frank Capra romantic comedy).
