Washington Post Film Critic Jan 21, 2008
We saw many great films there and one of the best evenings ever was when Irene Dunne appeared in person for an interview following one of her movies. I still remember her explanation of why Cary Grant was her favorite leading man: "Don't tell Cary I told you," she said, "but he always said I was the sweetest smelling actress he ever worked with.". (Washington Post)
* [ HARDCOVER: US ] The Hollywood stars who didn't quite shoot all the way Nov 4, 2007
Basinger lavishes fond attention on several actors, like Errol Flynn, Lana Turner, Tyrone Power, Irene Dunne and Jean Arthur, included because their careers illustrate the shortcomings of the star machine, or the ways in which a wily actor could game the system ... The book is filled with happy observations like these, although I'm still not sure what it means to say that "Irene Dunne is Doris Day before Doris Day was Doris Day.". The week's best films Oct 27, 2007
In less skilled hands than George Stevens', and with smaller talents than Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, this might have been a horribly sentimental affair, but instead it's a glorious drama, a weepie that actually makes you weep. 'English Rose' showed grit in film roles Oct 22, 2007
Refusing to be entirely defined by red hair, porcelain looks and stage-trained diction, Kerr simply would not settle for being Our Lady of Manners, heiress to the mantle of Helen Hayes, Greer Garson and Irene Dunne. Turner Classic Movies to Honor Six-Time Oscar(R) Nominee Deborah Kerr Oct 19, 2007
In many ways, she filled the void Irene Dunne would soon create by leaving films. Gracious, ladylike and smart, Kerr would in fact recreate two Dunne roles: the proper Englishwoman who becomes governess to a potentate's brood in the musicalized version of Anna and the King of Siam, The King and I (1956), with her singing dubbed by Marni Nixon, and the heroine prevented from making a crucial rendezvous with her lover in An Affair to Remember (1957), based on Dunne's Love Affair. Columbia films missing from the vaults Sep 7, 2007
"Theodora Goes Wild" (1936): Everything with Irene Dunne should be on DVD, including this howler from a Mary McCarthy story about the author of a sexy bestseller who is really a small-town girl. That may be a stretch, since Dunne is a goddess, but the fact that someone like (gulp) Norma Shearer may be better known today is a crime. (Variety)

Awkward customer Mar 30, 2007
She was very striking in both, very Viennese in her training and diction, and she was Acting with a capital A. In those days, apparently, that was enough to let voters forget the more professional virtues of Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey, Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth, Barbara Stanwyck in Stella Dallas or even Garbo in Camille. Those four still break your heart; Rainer looks like a porcelain figurine. (Guardian Unlimited -- Film)
