Time changes all but this picture's sumptuous beauty  Nov 1, 2008
In Ashes of Time Redux, Wong Kar-wai returns to where he started, engineering small changes that are less an improvement than a reminder - of a good film that would eventually give birth to a great film like In the Mood for Love. The ideas are here, so is the talent, but both needed a few more years to develop. (Globe and Mail)

Film: Wong Kar-wai's phoenix project, rising at last  Oct 4, 2008
It was a rueful coincidence for an auteur whose work ("In the Mood for Love," "Chungking Express") often mines the terrain of the ephemeral present, the disappearing past and the longing for what might have been. Wong began hunting down prints of the film, some tucked away in vaults of far-flung Chinatown theaters abroad. (International Herald Tribune)

    Scared scriptless  Sep 19, 2008
"But when I watched one of his movies, In The Mood for Love, I thought, 'Wow! That's just the most beautiful film I've ever seen'. For some reason I had a blind trust, I suppose because he needed me. So I jumped in and said, 'OK, we'll figure it out.' I wouldn't have done it for anybody else.". Natalie Portman, on the other hand, had been wanting to work with Wong for years, as had Jude Law and Rachel Weisz. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

In the Mood for Love' ('Fa yeung nin wa') Hong Kong/China (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000) Wong was heavily influenced by Hitchcock's psychological thriller "Vertigo" during the making of this poetic, exquisitely shot meditation on love and loss starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. A Hong Kong crime drama with style  Aug 21, 2008
Wong Kar-wai was about 30 when he introduced himself in 1988 with "As Tears Go By," and while he was obviously working to become the king of lush movie atmospherics, he was also apparently a student of both John Woo and Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets." Which is to say before Wong cast spells with "Chungking Express," "Fallen Angels," "Happy Together," and "In the Mood for Love," he was under somebody else's spell. The wild fight sequences, the hellishly lit brotherly angst: He was mortal once. (Boston Globe)

    This week's new releases (July 13)  Jul 13, 2008
Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar Wai produced this freewheeling parody of wuxia pian swordfight films, based on the same Jin Yong novel as his own "Ashes of Time." Today, the movie plays like a who's who of familiar HK names: Tony Leung ("Lust, Caution"), Maggie Cheung ("In the Mood for Love"), and even Sammo Hung as fight choreographer. Infectiously wacky. My Blueberry Nights: Berry bad movie  May 10, 2008
Anyone hoping for a romantic masterpiece like the Hong Kong auteur's 2000 sensation In the Mood for Love is in for a pie in the kisser. This one is so far off Wong's best that it can't even be described as an interesting failure. (Toronto Star)

My Blueberry Nights  May 9, 2008
The celebrated stylist behind In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Ashes of Time is way out of his element in his story of various lonely Americans living in New York, Memphis and Las Vegas. The Wong themes - melancholy, memory and misfits - and his stylistic flourishes are all in place: There's the retrospective voice-over narration, the lounge-music soundtrack, the expressionist colour palette dominated by red-orange lighting, with fluttery editing to signal the passage... (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

An insubstantial slice of life, love  May 9, 2008
Wong's best movies, in particular the sublime In the Mood for Love, have centered on tentative love affairs that never quite take hold. But the decision to keep the potential lovers apart throughout the movie, not to mention Elizabeth's apparent obliviousness to Jeremy's feelings (or Jones' inability to express anything resembling inner conflict) makes the movie feel more plotless than excruciating. (Baltimore Sun)

    Sci-Fi Meets Sensuous in '2046'  May 7, 2008
Following 'In the Mood for Love' is '2046', directed by Wong Kar Wai, starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, with cinematographer Christopher Doyle ... 2046 follows the movie In the Mood for Love with these familiar words: what people did in the old days when they had secrets they didn t want to share ... Departing from the tension and nostalgic sets of In the Mood for Love , the film begins with a fantasy train called 2046 , which takes you to a place where you can relive lost memories. Lost souls share sweet treats on the road  Apr 18, 2008
If you're in the mood for love and for this director's luxuriant self-indulgence, though, it's a tonic nonetheless - a gorgeously shot road-movie trifle that requires some of our better-known actors and singers to swoon through Wong's relocated wonderland ... It's quite possible that if you translated Wong masterpieces like 1991's "Days of Being Wild" and 2000's "In the Mood for Love" into English, they too would sound like the musings of an over-romantic girl diarist. (Boston Globe)

Singer Norah Jones branches out with her acting debut  Apr 14, 2008
He is Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai, known for sensuous, stylized movies such as In the Mood for Love. The women that he s used are so gorgeous, so I was kind of terrified, Jones said of international beauties Maggie Cheung, Gong Li and Ziyi Zhang. (Boston Herald)

    'I Was Terrified'  Apr 13, 2008
After watching his previous work and falling in love with the mysterious style of "In the Mood for Love," the singer agreed - even though there was no script to read, no character to study and she had zero acting experience. "I took a few acting classes and asked the director if he could tell me a little something about the film or the character that I could work on in class," she says. (San Francisco Chronicle -- Entertainment)

    Norah's first role:  Apr 9, 2008
NEW YORK -- It was the kind of offer that most Hollywood A-listers would jump at: a chance to work with Wong Kar-Wai, the critically acclaimed Hong Kong director of "In the Mood for Love" and "Chungking Express." But the woman that Wong wanted wouldn't call him back ... Finally, Jones watched Wong's lush romance "In the Mood for Love," and that got her to return his call -- but she still didn't know what he wanted. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

Audiences keep betting on '21'  Apr 6, 2008
The Jude Law-Norah Jones romantic drama should chart just behind the opening of the helmer's February 2001 film "In the Mood for Love" which also bowed at six theaters, racking up an opening day of $31,710 and a three-day of $113,280. Links posted in this story. (Variety)

Wong Kar Whatever  Apr 5, 2008
In the spirit of Wong's biggest hit in the United States, In the Mood for Love (2000), this fanciful take on the American road movie is almost militantly romantic ... In the Mood for Love made me covet a closet full of custom-made cheongsams and a recording of Nat King Cole singing "Quizs, Quizs, Quizs," but I can't for the life of me remember anything about the story. (Slate)

'Blueberry Nights': Dark and gooey  Apr 4, 2008
The English-language feature debut of Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai (In the Mood for Love) is beautifully shot at times, with its neon colors and moody, dreamy style. Other times his photography is off-putting and self-consciously arty. (USA Today -- Life)

Wong Way For Norah  Apr 4, 2008
Wong has made some of the most memorable films of the last 20 years, "In the Mood for Love," "Chungking Express" and "2046" among them ... (Do me a favor and rent "In the Mood for Love," in which the two show what screen passion can be. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

Norah Jones devotes 'Nights' to her acting  Apr 3, 2008
Then she was approached by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai (In the Mood for Love) about starring in his film. "It took me a few weeks to say yes because I was diving into a world I know nothing about and had no real experience in," she says. (USA Today -- Life)

Blueberry Nights: Wong Kar-Wais bad apple  Apr 2, 2008
The director of such contemporary masterworks of longing and lost love as 2046, In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Happy Together and Days of Being Wild, Wong makes movies where heartache and obsession are communicated through silent stares, pop songs, mood lighting, colorful art direction and even the great hairstyles of the 1960s. And thus it gives me no pleasure to point out that his English-language debut is something of a disaster. (MSNBC -- Movies)

" Hendricks wasn't the first to write lyrics to jazz instrumental solos. Eddie Jefferson had notable success with a vocal version of James Moody's I'm in the Mood for Love (released as Moody's Mood for Love), and Ross had made a splash with a solo version of a Wardell Gray tune called Twisted (which Lambert, Hendricks and Ross rerecorded, and Joni Mitchell eventually covered). But his ability to find a story in the twists and turns of an improvised melody remains second to none, and he has... (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

My Blueberry Nights - the Sunday Times review  Feb 24, 2008
Directed and co-written by Wong Kar Wai, who made In the Mood for Love, My Blueberry Nights is a road movie that takes us down the highways and byways of broken hearts. But instead of the great open spaces beneath big American skies usually found in road movies, this is mostly set in the grimy interiors of diners and the booze-fumed dankness of barroom dives. Lessons in love  Feb 18, 2008
In the Mood for Love Wong Kar Wais cult hit delivers exactly what its title suggests a mood so thick and lustrous, you could serve it with chocolate. Although the film is borderline art-house, with dragging, sometimes tediously-slow frames, the visuals and haunting soundtrack carry the storyline of a constipated, pregnant love to almost masterful perfection. Moser Baer partners Palador to enter Premium DVD Mkt  Nov 28, 2007
The tie-up with Moser Baer Entertainment will now allow Indians from across the country to legally own a Bergman or Kurosawa or any of the other masters and be suitably awed by their art, craft and wizardry over the cinematic medium. Movie review: Political debate center stage in ‘Rendition’  Oct 24, 2007
The film s signature twist did surprise me, though it is derivative of an editing technique used in Quentin Tarantino s Pulp Fiction and Wong Kar-Wai s In the Mood For Love. The device lends a definite rewatchability factor to the movie. (Lompoc Record, CA)

'Lust, Caution': Slow Boat, By Kurt Loder  Oct 6, 2007
Since Yee's presumably brutal depredations are never specified, the character remains something of a cipher throughout the film a waste of Tony Leung's charismatic warmth, so memorably deployed by director Wong Kar Wai in such pictures as "In the Mood for Love" and "2046." Half of his long acting career is defined by signature tough guy performances in bloody Hong Kong crime films (the Infernal Affairs trilogy, Hard Boiled, War of the Underworld and Bullet in the Head, among many others) while he has spent the other half smouldering in everything from swirling historical fantasies such as Hero and Flowers of Shanghai to the art-house hits Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, 2046, and Ashes of Time (possibly one of the most opaque movies ever made). War, Sex ... Zzzzz  Sep 28, 2007
The performances - even by Leung, the suave, accomplished star of Wong Kar-Wai's "2046" and "In the Mood for Love" - are so flat that you don't really much care what happens to anybody. Though Leung and Wei go full frontal for some extremely acrobatic sadomasochistic sex scenes, they're such ciphers, their encounters lack any genuine heat. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

And Leung, the Asian film icon, functions here as a much darker figure than weve ever seen from him in such films as Hero, Infernal Affairs and In the Mood for Love. It stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai, who finally gets it on after the enforced chastity of Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love. Following close behind, and breathing almost as heavily, are two films that received three votes apiece: horror king George Romero's 21st-century zombie rekindling Diary of the Dead; and Sean Penn's wilderness adventure Into the Wild, based on the true story of a city boy who braved Alaska's feral beasts on a dangerous solo hike. When the spotlight fades  Aug 24, 2007
It's In the Mood for Love meets The Year My Voice Broke, perhaps, featuring a careful resurrection of the costumes and decor of the early '70s, from its suburban Chinese restaurants to its long white socks. The actors, too, become fetishes, objects of desire, like Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung did in "In the Mood for Love," as they sidled down hotel corridors, she in her sultry clinging cheongsams ... "My Blueberry Nights" was created out of leftovers from "In the Mood for Love," with Cheung and Leung, a segment that the director put aside with a notion of using it later. Maybe he would like some music.' But then he said, 'Do you want to be in a movie?". The result is My Blueberry Nights, a gentle romance that opened the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night.
