He's hardly the first director to go there ("High Noon" springs to mind), but I doubt anyone before him has set a drama of fate and ethics in the jiu-jitsu subculture of Los Angeles. Stagecoach hinges on Ringo Starr's love for the prostitute with the heart of gold; My Darling Clementine hinges on Wyatt Earp's darling Clementine; High Noon hinges on Grace Kelly's pacifist Quaker bride, who spends most of the film in her wedding dress and proves braver than most of the townspeople.
