Sandler: We cant be afraid to offend  Aug 16, 2008
Sandler, of course, has never exactly been renowned for his subtlety, but his extraordinary box office success with low-brow slapstick fare from Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison to The Waterboy and Little Nicky means that he s been a constant favourite with his prime target audience teenage lads. Then last year came I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, wherein Sandler played one of two firefighters faking a gay marriage for financial gain, attracting criticism from the gay community over its... Adam Sandler’s ‘The Zohan’ is a total mess  Jun 10, 2008
Sandler regresses back to his Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison roots, only this time his character is Zohan, an Israeli anti-terrorism commando of incredible strength and agility. Sandler really buffed up for the role, not to mention that his crotch appears to be of gargantuan size, a running gag throughout. (Woodlands Villager, TX)

Messing in the Middle East  Jun 7, 2008
"Some people told me, 'Don't do it,' just knowing the log line that they had heard," said Dennis Dugan, the movie's director, who directed Sandler in Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. In hopes of forestalling criticism, the filmmakers sought actors of Israeli and Arab descent to play the many Middle Eastern characters in Zohan, and even opened a casting office in Israel. (The Age, Australia -- Entertainment)

In Zohan, message interferes with laugh out loud humor  Jun 7, 2008
The stupidity is expected, but the seriousness makes you wonder what director Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore) is thinking. Really, commentary on the Israel/Palestine conflict in a silly Adam Sandler movie. (Hillsdale Independent, NY)

The chosen one dashed off Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy and Anger Management ... What comes through, said director Dugan, 61, who guided Sandler in Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, is that he's just a really nice person. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Zohan vs. Guru  Jun 6, 2008
Further, the movie was directed by Dennis Dugan, who goes back to the Happy Gilmore days. The Love Guru, which was written by Myers and Graham Gordy, was directed by first-timer Marco Schnabel (a second-unit director on Goldmember). (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

'Zohan' is silly and messy, but it means well  Jun 4, 2008
(Dugan did previously direct Sandler in "Happy Gilmore," ''Big Daddy" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," though, so the lowest-common-denominator elements are right in his wheel house.)But "Zohan" also addresses far more complex issues than those movies did. Several characters on both sides speak with frustration and sadness about how they wish the fighting would end; Zohan tells his parents he wants to leave the army and become a stylist because, "I like hair. It's pleasant, it's... (The Courier News)

Golf swing could be a Hollywood handicap  Apr 5, 2008
"You can't say that about some other golf movies. I'm not sure Happy Gilmore [with Adam Sandler] honored golf. And Hagen was an incredibly fascinating man. He broke open the barriers that were in front of professional players back then. There was a time when they couldn't even come into private clubs through the front door. He was so good that he demanded fair treatment for himself and other pros, and he got it.". The most memorable golf Bill Murray played in a movie came in Caddyshack, when he... (Florida Times-Union)

FILM UNDERGROUND PRESENTS:  Apr 4, 2008
Ebert sees Barry Egan in "Punch-Drunk" as the logical extension of the rage-filled, albeit more self-assured, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. It's interesting that Sandler made "Anger Management" just a year later, which also chronicles the effects of repressed anger on a man's relationships. (The New Hampshire, NH)

The end of an era  Jan 25, 2008
Yes, the advertisements for diabetes testing supplies remained, but to my dismay, the man who had once beat the crap out of Happy Gilmore did not. In my groggy state, I had forgotten that Drew Carey had replaced retired Bob Barker as the host of the show. (The Daily Texan, TX)

    Rude, crude and lewd|  Jan 2, 2008
The help of Sandler regulars Rob Schneider, Allen Covert and 'Happy Gilmore' director Dennis Dugan, does little to elevate this latest Happy Madison production to the level of its forebearers. The film's biggest failure is that it's just not that funny. (iAfrica.com)

    50 First Dates  Oct 15, 2007
Having achieved his initial success as a moronic adolescent in an adult's body in hits including Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy, Adam Sandler recognised that such a persona had a use-by date and began to play grown men (recently his screen persona has evolved into that of the family man). In 50 First Dates, that translated into Sandler, whose characters used to implode at the mere thought of a female breast, somewhat improbably playing a love-'em-and-leave-'em lothario. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

'Balls of Fury' just another movie based on wacky sport  Sep 8, 2007
Despite all of the various quasi-sports that mentioned earlier, all of these movies seem to owe a great debt of gratitude to "Happy Gilmore." The basic plot points are all similar as they involve someone who resists the idea of going along the journey, then after he agrees he goes through a wacky training session before he is forced to face off against his rival. The only difference between all of these movies and "Happy Gilmore" is that it was much funnier and more original at the time. (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier)

Hot Rod Review  Aug 7, 2007
That said, not all comedies need to become instant classics -- especially not when they're in the SNL-related canon -- so this film's aim is overambitious but true, earning it a rank far above Superstar or Black Sheep but below Tommy Boy or Happy Gilmore. Clearly Samberg and Co. have a good sense of what's funny in real life, but less so in movies; if they can get the two switched around, then they might have something special. (IGN FilmForce)

The film, which stars Sandler and Kevin James as two firefighters who marry in order to secure James' pension, was written by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor (Sideways, About Schmidt) and directed by Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore). Chuck also stars Rob Schneider, Ving Rhames, and the lovely Jessica Biel as a lawyer/ love interest for Sandler's character. (IGN FilmForce)

Domestic partners in crime  Jul 22, 2007
Wheaton native and frequent Sandler collaborator Dennis Dugan ("Happy Gilmore," "Big Daddy") has taken what could have been a funny premise, especially given the comedic talents of James and Sandler, and turned out an uneven and often choppy cinematic ride. Perhaps most painful are a bizarre shower scene at the firehouse and the film's climactic moment: an extremely forced and uncomfortable city hearing to determine whether Chuck and Larry are truly partners in life. (Chicago Sun-Times)

Review: 'Chuck And Larry' Suffers Identity Crisis  Jul 21, 2007
" ()To be fair, you don't go to an Adam Sandler movie to not laugh at one-liners and, truth be told, find some antics offensive, so why not just keep it that way? The film's sappy ending -- complete with a little girl's speech about animals in the wild that mate with same-sex partners -- makes the film's message of tolerance and acceptance as fraudulent as Larry Valentine's domestic partnership papers. True Sandler fans should skip "Chuck and Larry" and watch "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore"... (Click2Houston, TX)

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry  Jul 16, 2007
In another incongruous pairing, "Sideways" writing team Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor join "Golden Girls" scribe Barry Fanaro and director Dennis Dugan (who previously helmed Sandler's "Happy Gilmore"). Pic initially plays like a screwball comedy with a bit more smarts, but ultimately, the more banal sitcom impulses win out. (Variety)

Exclusive: Chuck Norris addresses career accomplishments, current ventures  Jul 9, 2007
Bob was a great martial arts student of mine, even showing off his technique in the now classic Adam Sandler comedy, "Happy Gilmore.". Certainly Barker - whose game-hosting career began in 1956 with "Truth or Consequences?" - did himself a huge favor with younger viewers by sending up his own amiable image in Adam Sandler's 1996 blockbuster, "Happy Gilmore." Uncharacteristically hardboiled, Barker physically kicked the cocky kid's butt (and other body parts) in what's become a cult comedy touchstone.
