News and Articles on Girl with a Pearl Earring

3 classics revamped with modernity and verve  Oct 7, 2008
On the one hand, you could lament a current season where the "new" work consists mostly of inept retreads of films or the books that spawned them: first "Rain Man," now "Girl With A Pearl Earring," the latter adapted by David Joss Buckley from Tracy Chevalier's best-selling novel with what is barely even a tin ear: "You paint to live," the artist Johannes Vermeer is told in the sort of breathless remark that could well make a Dutch master consider retraining as a plumber. (Joe Dowling's clunky... (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

Rain Man cruises into Theatreland  Sep 21, 2008
They will be followed shortly by Girl with a Pearl Earring, a play based on the Tracy Chevalier novel that was filmed with Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson in 2003. (BBC News -- Entertainment)

Nobody would even talk about it.'". Under a story headlined, "Actress has a crush on Obama," Johansson, a vocal supporter of Obama, in June... (WNBC.com, NY)

In the novel named for the Dutch painter's masterpiece "Girl With a Pearl Earring," author Tracy Chevalier imagines a conversation in which Vermeer explains its purpose to his young assistant, Griet: "The camera obscura helps me see in a different way," he explained. "To see more of what is there." That intensity and fresh perspective helps explain why an artist would want to look at the landscape from inside a dark room. (Boston Globe)

A particularly dim-witted girl mistakes the painting for a portrait of Scarlett Johansson. (Melbourne Herald Sun)

The Other Boleyn Girl  Feb 29, 2008
This leaves Johansson to tackle the thankless role of the passive, maternal blonde, a challenge she meets by reprising her Girl With a Pearl Earring pouty but bland. A powerful, modern woman  Feb 24, 2008
Girl With A Pearl Earring, a visually splendid costume drama based on a bestseller, probably offered a strategic move into the brocade world of British period film. Something in the way she moves.  Mar 11, 2007
" Perhaps Johansson is wary of being associated exclusively with Allen. She'd already inspired her own role in Sofia Coppola's break-out film Lost in Translation, played an artist's muse in Girl with a Pearl Earring, driving Colin Friel's Vermeer to distraction, and she is currently the Louis Vuitton girl, usurping a role once filled by Quentin Tarantino's muse, Uma Thurman. She's just spreading the inspiration around. The most common job for a modern muse, though, is as inspiration and helpmeet... (The Age, Australia -- Entertainment)

The Constant Gardener  Feb 20, 2007
A few days later I happened to see the film of Girl with a Pearl Earring, where again chunks of the story were missing to condense it for the screen, but the film was so skilfully made that it wasn't a distraction. At the end of The Constant Gardener I was merely reminded of why movies and literature will forever be different. (Suite101.com)

Music globetrotters in spotlight  Feb 13, 2007
Desplat's nomination carries additional weight because of his well-liked music for "The Painted Veil" (a recent Golden Globe winner) and the much-talked-about but unnominated scores for "Girl With a Pearl Earring" and "Birth" over the past three years. Americans Thomas Newman and Philip Glass are the veterans in this crowd: Newman, the popular local whose seven prior noms have not yet won him the prize; and Glass, the New York concert and opera composer who previously had two noms without a win. (Variety)

    Eurotrash Schoolboy:  Feb 12, 2007
For screenwriter Thomas Harris, who invented the Lecter character in his 1981 novel Red Dragon, and director Peter Webber (Girl With a Pearl Earring), WWII serves as a convenient clearinghouse, a Wal-Mart of trauma. Getcher vast reserves of human suffering here. (Slate)

This movie drained me. But not in the way a vampire drains blood from its victim. That act has a predatory intimacy. The contact of fangs on neck is erotic - a deep, dirty first kiss, and the prelude to fatal sexual enslavement. Hannibal Rising isn't nearly that much fun. It doesn't, in the manner of its hero, take a... (TIME)

Life of Young Hannibal Lecter Comes to Big Screen  Feb 11, 2007
A trusted source of newsand information since 1942. But it's a bit tricky because, for me, my work in this film was not to try to imitate or copy Anthony Hopkins," he says. "I think the idea was more to try to pick a few details in his performance and then mix it to my own recipe to create my own Hannibal Lecter. (Voice of America)

Sympathy for the cannibal: Hannibal Rising review  Feb 10, 2007
One weakness is director Peter Webber's (Girl with a Pearl Earring) failure to control the film's pacing. By the time we make it to the last bad guy standing, we're in need of a big dramatic payoff, and Webber almost rushes the finale without a great line or sight gag to hang it on. (National Post)

'Hannibal Rising': The Doctor's Not In, By Kurt Loder  Feb 10, 2007
And director Peter Webber ("Girl With a Pearl Earring") provides some jazzy angles on the action, and he keeps things moving. But the screenplay, by Lecter auteur Thomas Harris (who apparently cooked up this script and his new novel of the same title at about the same time), is very silly from the start; and it's so dull you wish the old Anthony Hopkins Hannibal, who does not appear in this film, would drop by and liven things up in some suitably gruesome manner. (VHI.com -- Music News)

Hannibal Lecter saved my life  Feb 9, 2007
Webber's 2003 film, Girl With a Pearl Earring, was nominated for three Oscars, so he gave Hannibal Rising instant credibility when he agreed to direct. His motivation for doing so was simple: a chance to play with a budget of $US50 million ($65 million) and an opportunity to break from potentially being "condemned to a life of heavy-breathing period movies". (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

What's eating Hannibal? Psychoanalysis is hard to digest.  Feb 9, 2007
Director Peter Webber ("Girl With a Pearl Earring") and his crew give "Hannibal Rising" a clean, professional look. For better and worse, the movie is more attractive and competently assembled than its schlock peers. (Boston Globe)

    Interview : Gaspard Ulliel  Feb 9, 2007

    Movie Openings  Feb 9, 2007
"It's a movie about the Monster As Avenging Angel. We learn that the most famous serial killer in fiction got that way during World War II when soldiers on the war's Eastern Front killed and ate his little sister. Thomas Harris wrote this script himself, and it's nothing if not fast, tight and glowing with that black light that seems to emanate from everything that comes from Harris' dark, dark imagination. That it's directed by the man who gave us "Girl With a Pearl Earring' means that this is... (Buffalo News -- Entertainment)

"Hannibal Rising" | Ohh, the bandits ate his sister  Feb 9, 2007
Director Peter Webber did the gorgeous and stately "Girl with a Pearl Earring"; and with a weak first-time screenplay from Hannibal's novelist Thomas Harris, he can't find a pace here that achieves a lick of suspense. Perhaps aware of how even sillier 2001's "Hannibal" looks in retrospect, they seem to be trying not to leave openings for unintentional laughter. (Seattle Times)

Hannibal Rising has no bite  Feb 9, 2007
The director, Peter Webber, had a minor art-house success with 2003s Girl With a Pearl Earring, and he does demonstrate a restraint thats rare in modern horror films. Most of the killings are not shown directly. (MSNBC -- Movies)

Projection Booth: Will 'Norbit' Flatten 'Hannibal Rising'  Feb 9, 2007
Throw in the fact that the film comes from the director of "The Girl With a Pearl Earring" and you've got a big bloody question mark of a flick. That's a tough one-two punch of new contenders for last week's #1 flick, "The Messengers," to contend with. (VHI.com -- Music News)

    Hannibal Rising  Feb 8, 2007
Since Harris is the only one credited as scriptwriter he must wear the raspberry, although we may reserve some for the director, Peter Webber ( Girl With A Pearl Earring). He has shown spectacularly poor judgement throughout this travesty - the story of young Hannibal, from age six to 20. (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

SEEDS OF HORROR  Feb 8, 2007
That it's directed by Peter Webber, the man who made the exquisite "Girl with a Pearl Earring," means that this is a horror thriller about Old Europe with uncommon intelligence and atmospheric terror ... A double helping of Hannibal  Feb 5, 2007
Creating a narrative in two different forms at once is tricky: Harris, who lives in Miami and Sag Harbor, would often say, "Leave me alone, let me finish the book," when the producers and the director, Peter Webber ("Girl With a Pearl Earring"), arrived requesting changes, said Martha De Laurentiis, Dino's wife and also a producer on the film. "I think he thought it would be much easier" to write a screenplay, she said. (Newsday -- Entertainment)

As well as The Queen, which has won a Golden Globe and ten Academy Award nominations, Aramid s team has financed films including Girl with a Pearl Earring, which starred Scarlett Johansson, Quentin Tarantino s Kill Bill 2 and the surprise British hit Bend it Like Beckham. Experts say that hedge funds are increasingly interested in asset-backed lending, such as film and television financing, because it offers an opportunity to diversify their investments. Alexandre Desplat breathes new life into Hollywood movie music  Jan 9, 2007
That's less the fault of composers than of directors, who commonly prescore their films with temporary music during editing, then frequently expect the final score to emulate that "temp track." So originality, when it occurs, can be startling, as when American audiences first heard the enchanting waltzes of "Girl With a Pearl Earring" in 2003, or the fairy-tale flutes and surging orchestral drama of "Birth" in 2004. Both scores were the work of Alexandre Desplat, a 45-year-old Paris composer who... (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)
