And yes, "Friday Night Lights" and "Big Love" could have been considered, too, but this list is pretty solid ... And those choices are Dominic West from "The Wire," Kyle Chandler from "Friday Night Lights" and Eddie Izzard from "The Riches." Yes, I thought about Edward James Olmos from "Battlestar Galactica" and even Denis Leary in a subpar season of "Rescue Me." They should have been rousing and exciting (as they were in "Friday Night Lights") but instead are mundane and elementary. Palmer never looks comfortable throwing the ball and most plays are so heavily edited with close-ups that one never gets the sense she's making big passes. (NBC4.tv, CA)

    Matthew Gilbert's TV14: Emmy shame edition  Aug 18, 2008
The Emmy voters tend to be stingy when it comes to teen actors such as the younger cast members on "Friday Night Lights" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." This bias was acutely obvious during the 1999-2002 run of "Once and Again," the broken-family drama from Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, when Evan Rachel Wood was not given any props ... "FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS" Of course this series is on the Emmy snub list, and near the top. (Boston Globe)

    Critic's Corner chat  Jul 29, 2008
I think "Grey's Anatomy" and "Friday Night Lights" both would have been worthy contenders in the drama category - better, I think, than "Damages." And in comedy, I would have put "Pushing Daisies," "The Big Bang Theory" or "The New Adventures of Old Christine" ahead of "Curb" and "Entourage." If you don't mind, I also want to use you question to raise another point. Though you haven't done this, many of the rest of us beat up on the Emmys, and with good reason. (USA Today -- Life)

New EIU guide tops a 'phone book' moment  Jul 22, 2008
We spend much of August getting tired of the preseason chores just wanting the first Friday night lights. As much as I sit in July waiting to see an Eastern Illinois football scrimmage, after a few plays the realization returns that none of this counts, I m not smart enough to really make any preseason analysis from EIU against EIU and that all I really want is that Aug. 28 kickoff at Central Michigan. Hey, friend, do I know you?  Jul 21, 2008
Not that long ago, I needed some advice on the book business and thought to ask my friend Buzz Bissinger, the author of "Friday Night Lights" and "A Prayer for the City." Says Matt Roush of , "Lets hail the Emmy voters for recognizing the creative rebirth of 'Lost' this season, which had fallen off the list since winning best drama for its first season. And what a pleasant shock to see the Emmys embrace (only a year late) the twisted brilliance of 'Dexter' in its second year for coming into its own with plotting that never stopped. No major nominations for "Friday Night Lights'' and "Big Love ... It's hard to understand how ABC's "Boston Legal,'' which is past its prime, and "Two and a Half Men,'' which never had a prime, continue to rake in the kudos while "How I Met Your Mother'' squeaks by with only one significant nomination (Neil Patrick Harris). That is the wonder and the weirdness of award shows, I guess - that actors such as Mariska Hargitay and James Spader seem to get free passes onto the nominee list every year,... Among the 10 finalists previously named by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are "Boston Legal," "Damages," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Grey's Anatomy," "House," "Lost," "Mad Men," "The Tudors" and "The Wire.". Noticeably absent from the list of Best Drama finalists is "Heroes," which scored a nod in the top category for debut season last year, but was hampered by shortened season this year due to the strike by the Writers Guild of America. (Click2Houston, TX)

    Emmy's list  Jul 15, 2008
On a down note, expect The Wire and Friday Night Lights to be snubbed once again, along with Dexter, even though all three programs made the list of finalists ... Myself, I'd rather watch a Wire or Friday Night Lights rerun than watch a new episode of Grey's, but then I don't get an Emmy vote ... I do vote for the TCA Awards, however, and I'm perfectly happy with the TCA's list of drama nominees: Damages, Friday Night Lights, Lost, Mad Men and The Wire. (Canada.com)

Having an open mind may help understand ‘Hancock’ quirks  Jul 7, 2008
The saturated colors and director Peter Berg s ( Friday Night Lights ) fondness for close-ups are distractions, not enhancements. Will Smith appealing as crude hero in 'Hancock'  Jul 5, 2008
It ought to be clear that director Peter Berg ("The Kingdom," "Friday Night Lights") wouldn't have signed on for a mindless superhero comedy. He pushes the PG-13 limit with language, action (a prison scene with Hancock doling out his own brand of punishment is shocking but also painfully hilarious) and seamlessly rendered, visceral special effects. Film review: 'Hancock,' a superhero in need of a shave  Jul 4, 2008
Berg, who explored heroism of a different stripe in his poignant high school football movie, "Friday Night Lights," and showed off terrific action chops in the underrated flick "The Kingdom," is not a comedy natural. He squeezes laughs out of "Hancock" - Bateman needs no goosing - though some of its biggest yuks are fairly yucky, like a cringing bit involving a bizarre variant on prison rape.
