At the core of this glimpse into the complexities of American values is state prosecutor Dana Andrews, who does an about-face to defend the accused -- and shakes the town to its core, including his own wife, Jane Wyatt. The climactic courtroom sequence remains one of the most startling of its kind. (Scripps Howard News Wire)

Dana Andrews (1909-1992). A popular leading man of the 1940s, Andrews never received an Oscar nomination despite excellent performances as a young farmer falsely accused of rustling in The Ox-Bow Incident (1943); as the police detective trying to solve the mystery of Laura (1944); and as the troubled World War II veteran in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). New DVDs: 'Picture Snatcher,' 'Daisy Kenyon,' 'Forbidden Hollywood'  Apr 16, 2008
The movie, based on a popular novel by Elizabeth Janeway about a love triangle, is a notch above most cinematic soap operas because of its terrific cast (Joan Crawford, Dana Andrews, Henry Fonda) and because of Preminger's professionalism and sharp eye for character. Crawford's Daisy is a New York commercial illustrator conducting an affair with a married lawyer, Dan (Andrews), a charming fellow who can't quite bring himself to leave his wife (Ruth Warrick) and kids. Back story: A commercial artist (Joan Crawford) dangles between a wretchedly married lawyer (Dana Andrews, an impressively complex characterization) and a shaken war vet (Henry Fonda). A LOOK AT FILMS YOU OTTO KNOW  Jan 3, 2008
"Laura" plays on a double bill with the severely underrated "Daisy Kenyon" (1947), starring Joan Crawford in a romantic triangle with Henry Fonda and Dana Andrews. Preminger's reputation suffered from his dreadful late films such as "Skidoo" and "The Human Factor." A new biography by Foster Hirsch (who will introduce several titles) suggests that Preminger, a Viennese Jew who played Nazis in several movies (notably "Stalag 17"), may have overshadowed his movies by aggressively seeking publicity. Dana Andrews stars as a journo who plots with wealthy publisher Sidney Blackmer to get himself framed for murder, in order to illustrate the dangers of circumstantial evidence; but Blackmer dies, leaving him in the lurch on death row ... CAMPIN' IT UP  Jun 24, 2007
"Hot Rods to Hell" (1968), a Sam Katzman drive-in special starring faded stars Dana Andrews and Jeanne Crain as a couple tormented by drag-racing teens, turns up in a volume devoted to "terrorized travelers," along with Charlton Heston as the pilot of a plane diverted to Moscow in the semi-decent "Skyjacked" (1972). The most laughs per minute are delivered by "Zero Hour!" (1957), a howler written by Arthur Hailey ("Airport"). (New York Post -- Entertainment)

A Very Nasty Portrait of the Artist:  Feb 8, 2007
Watching Factory Girl is like sitting through some risible remake of Laura, the great '40s noir that brought Clifton Webb, in the role of Waldo Lydecker, hissing and drawling opposite Gene Tierney, until she's rescued by Dana Andrews. The difference, of course, is that 1944 is not 2007; that Webb attacks his role with such energy and lan that one can't help but root for him; and that Lydecker is not, after all, a real person. WWII 'Lives' resonates (Gary Arnold)  Jan 4, 2007
The patterns grow apparent after repeated viewings -- for example, the prevalence of triangular portraits, which commence when the three veterans, played by Fredric March, Dana Andrews and Harold Russell, become acquainted while sharing a flight in the nose of a B-17. But they facilitate introductions and exposition. (Washington Times, DC)

'Dj Vu' indeed -- time-traveling murder mystery has a familiar ring  Nov 23, 2006
So let's travel farther back in time, 62 years to be precise, to pinpoint my own deja vu: the unforgettable "Laura." Though Doug has more to fuel his obsession than Dana Andrews' 1944 detective, who was stuck with only a portrait of a dead woman to drool over while determining who did her in, the two sleuths are in a similar pickle. Talk about unrequited love. (San Francisco Chronicle)

" But gradually she worked herself up to leading lady to the biggest male stars of the time, including Cary Grant (None But The Lonely Heart), Dana Andrews (Boomerang!), Dick Powell (Pitfall) and Gary Cooper (Task Force). After Father Knows Best, she jokes she must have guested on every dramatic TV series around, including Marcus Welby in 1974 when her character was once again romantically involved with Bob Young. Flags joins noble line of WW II films  Oct 10, 2006
"The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946) Just a year after the war's end, William Wyler delivered a superb narrative of soldiers (Fredric March, Dana Andrews and Harold Russell, a veteran who lost his hands in the war) painfully readjusting to civilian life. Unlike many early war dramas, the film holds up remarkably well today. (MSNBC -- Movies)

    Arthur Franz  Aug 29, 2006
Although Franz wasn't very visible in many of his other pictures, he made an impression in The Member of the Wedding (1952) as a young man whose upcoming marriage causes such pain to his adolescent sister (Julie Harris) and as the politically ambitious DA prosecuting innocent Dana Andrews in Fritz Lang's Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956). Franz gained some notoriety among aficionados of schlocky 1950s sci-fi thrillers. (Guardian Unlimited -- Film)

Laura’ will bring back memories Meriden’s heyday  May 4, 2006
Written for the stage with Vera Caspary and based on her novel (from which a 1944 movie was made, starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb and Vincent Price and apparently without Sklar s involvement), Laura is a 1940s, noir-ish tale of murder and intrigue. It is probably Sklar s best-remembered work. (The Record-Journal)
