News and Articles on Cat People

In 'Happening,' a sense of doom at the end of the world  Jun 13, 2008
I don't mean that as an insult; once upon a time filmmakers like Don Siegel ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers") and Val Lewton ("Cat People") were able to say profound things within the context of low-budget sci-fi and horror. They frightened us more by showing us less, and they never called it Art. (Boston Globe)

Terror From The Deep  Apr 20, 2008
In a plot twist that recalls the Val Lewton-produced "Cat People" (1942), Mora thinks she's a descendant of the mythic "sea people" and has no choice but to kill during the full moon. In fact, her last two boyfriends drowned under mysterious circumstances. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

New on DVD: Nicole Kidman leads 'The Invasion'  Feb 1, 2008
Co-produced, "presented" and narrated in an effectively restrained vocal tempo by Martin Scorsese, this recent Turner Classic Movies portrait offers an array of superbly illustrative clips (from Cat People, I Walked With a Zombie, The Seventh Victim and the like). But it also delves into Lewton's insular life and his lesser known Mademoiselle Fifi and Youth Runs Wild at RKO, then three films at Paramount, MGM and Universal-International (a Western) after his bubble burst. (USA Today -- Life)

Newsweek: Oscar roundtable with Day-Lewis, more  Jan 23, 2008
I remember lying to a casting director, Barbara Claman, about this movie called "Cat People." She was, like, "You were in that, were you?" I was, like, yep. And she goes, "Because I cast that." I finally just said, "I can't get in SAG. Help me out." She helped me get a job on a film then called "The Predator." We shot it in Hungary. (MSNBC -- News)

Shedding light on a shadowy filmmaker  Jan 14, 2008
"The Curse of the Cat People," "The Leopard Man," "I Walked With a Zombie." The problem with producer Val Lewton lies in convincing casual movie fans that his movies aren't just better than their titles but different: poetic and inventive, charged with subtle European gloom ... "Curse of the Cat People" isn't a horror sequel at all but a piercing tale of childhood loneliness and imagination ... If you've never seen the original 1942 "Cat People," the scene in which a mysterious, feline-faced... (Boston Globe)

    Critic's corner  Jan 14, 2008
Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows 8 p.m., TCM The "Cat People" person. M*A*S*H 8:30 p.m., TV Land A Klinger episode. (Boston Globe)

DVD Watch: 'Cat People,' other Val Lewton cults  Jan 8, 2008
Cat People 1942, Warner, with Curse of the Cat People, $15 The recent San Francisco zoo incident hasn't exactly "de-creeped" Lewton's first movie, superior to Paul Schrader's 1982 remake ... I Walked With a Zombie 1943, Warner, with The Body Snatcher, $15 Despite a title that suggests Ed Wood, this oft-termed "Jane Eyre in Haiti" has a literate script and (as with Cat People) lots of photographic mood ... The Seventh Victim 1943, on Warner's 2005 Lewton box and a Jan. 29 update, both $60 Cat... (USA Today -- Life)

Movies that conjure an endless summer  Dec 26, 2007
Until Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and sex just seemed to go together like the words "racist" and "sheriff" in movies set near the Mississippi: Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy ('87), Lisa Bonet in Angel Heart ('87), Nastassja Kinski in leopard skin in the remake of Cat People ('82). Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake are the most recent participants in the swampy sex genre in Black Snake Moan ('07). (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

New on DVD: 'Mr. Brooks' is not the best guide  Oct 26, 2007
Director and noir/horror specialist Jacques Tourneur (Out of the Past, Cat People) seems a little lost, but the photography and Max Steiner's score got Oscar nominations. Co-star Virginia Mayo's glamour treatment contrasts amusingly with the previous year's White Heat, where she was the screen's premier gum-chewing gang moll. (USA Today -- Life)

Every dog has its day at Scottsdale firm  Oct 9, 2007
As for cat people out there, Mobility Electronics hasn't found a way to observe a feline-friendly day just yet, she said. The dogs probably think that's the cat's meow. (AZCentral -- Business)

'Bad' Makes For Good Viewing  Aug 12, 2007
By lucky coincidence, one of the movies Lewton produced, "Cat People" (1942), directed by Jacques Tourneur, will unreel Wednesday at Film Forum's "NYC Noir" festival ... "Cat People" will be on a double-bill at the Forum with the Robert Siodmak thriller "Phantom Lady" (1944), featuring Franchot Tone and Ella Raines. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

Sexiest Monster Movies Of All Time, In Rewind  Aug 8, 2007
"Cat People" (1942 and 1982) The 1942 version of "Cat People" is a cautionary film noir about the perils of sublimating sexuality ... In the 1982 remake, Nastassja Kinski plays Irena, this time being pursued by her cat brother (the always-creepy Malcolm McDowell) to engage in an incestuous relationship, as two cat people can't bring out the beast in each other. (VHI.com -- Music News)

Last of the great Hollywood outsiders  Aug 5, 2007
His last major studio production was Cat People in 1983, aside from the aborted debacle of his Exorcist prequel Dominion. That damn Exorcist situation, which I got into because The Walker had just fallen through, he sighs. (Times Online)

SCHLOCK EQUALS SHOCK  Jun 21, 2007
But Jonathan King also applies the subtler technique of an older forebear Val Lewton, the visionary producer behind significant creepers of the 1940s like Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie. Lewton s still-potent approach of top-loading his productions with a slow pace and painstakingly developed realism, followed by the jolt of extraordinary phenomena arriving during the second or third act, injects life into the base silliness of Black Sheep. (New York Press)

    'The Other Conquest' ****1/2  Jun 1, 2007
But Conquest's director, Salvador Carrasco, has no budget for the fancy cinematic tricks of his compeers: This film is as basic and stripped down as El Mariachi or Jacques Tourneur's Cat People. Carrasco uses shadows and mirrors to create effects he has no actual budget for. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

Filmmakers just can't get enough of zombies  May 11, 2007
I Walked With a Zombie (1943): Cat People director Jacques Tourneur's Jane Eyre-appropriated tale about the unstable wife of a West Indies plantation owner and her nurse's plot to employ voodoo to cure her provoked an offended New York Times reviewer to label it "a disgusting exaggeration of an abnormal, unhealthy life." But it was subsequently interpreted as being anti-fascist or anti-communist, take your pick. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies... Elsewhere, cantered camera angles invoke the woozy feel of camerawork in "Cat People" and some of the helmer's other pics. Such self-homage is fun for Schrader fans, but what's missing here is the ambitious innovation, emotional ferocity and spiritual topnotes of the director at his best, on view in "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters" and more recently in his underrated minor masterpiece "Auto Focus," to say nothing of his scripts for Martin Scorsese. Also serving on the body are Palestinian actress and filmmaker Hiam Abbass, ("The Nativity Story," "Paradise Now"); veteran German actor Mario Adorf; Hong Kong producer Nansun Shi ("Infernal Affairs," "Seven... (Variety)

Newcomer gets off to a rough start  Jan 10, 2007
More critically, though both McKeever and Perez-Ribada give decent performances, neither is convincing enough in his role to carry us into Puig's fantasy world, a world in which a gay window dresser (McKeever) slowly beguiles a committed, macho Marxist (Perez-Ribada) as he dreamily recounts the plot of the Val Lewton horror film Cat People. Both actors go for the obvious. (The Miami Herald)

The evolution of gore  Dec 10, 2006
Meanwhile, the success of the Friday the 13th series saw more studios indulging more graphic forms of violence in ever larger-budgeted movies: Raging Bull, The Thing, Scarface, An American Werewolf in London, Cat People. Each season seemed to bring a new level of graphic onscreen gore, with the inevitable result that taboos were not only broken but also dissolved, and gore, formerly an outlaw amusement for adventurous geeks, had become a centre-stage spectacle. Union wants guarantees from MMNA  Aug 10, 2006
Re: Catman wrote on August 09, 2006 8:36 PM:"I don't believe that you can say that the jobs at Cat are comparable to MMNA. The last I knew Cat doesn't produce a tractor every 55 seconds. Cat people rode the golden ship for many years and just recently gave concessions. And from some of the MMNA employees that work at CAT say it is a heck of alot easier than MMNA so I don't see the comparison. I am tired of reading about these people who are criticizing how much MMNA employees make. I think that... (The Pantagraph newspaper)

    Read Greta's Blog  May 27, 2006
Hi Greta Obviously Ruth Cisero's neighbors are not cat people, and I can understand how they would be upset by being attacked by a "mini-fridge" like Lewis. Pet owners need to understand that in most cities, there are ordinances against letting cats roam freely, just like dogs. (Fox News)

Dogs shame Paul Walker  Feb 24, 2006
All this being said, cat people should be forewarned to see a different movie. Much of the emotional impact of "Eight Below" depends on audience members being capable of empathizing with Jerry's attachment to his dogs, and it takes a true dog lover to be able to sit through extended scenes in which the only actors are of the canine persuasion. (Yale Daily News, CT)

Venture One-Act Festival falls just a tad short  Jan 13, 2006
