Christian Bale's Most Memorable Roles Jul 24, 2008
WHAT EW SAYS Owen Gleiberman: ''Bale, all steely reserve, once again captivates as the haunted caped crusader who must shed morality to beat the devil at his game. But just as 's 1989 Batman was anchored by the joy-buzzer glee of 's party-down Joker, The Dark Knight takes its cue from its Joker and his deadly circus of chaos. (Entertainment Weekly)

Johnny Depp and Jude Law set sights on Vancouver Feb 19, 2008
Adding one love interest in the story - in which Dr. Parnassus offers his daughter's hand in marriage to whoever can beat the devil at seducing souls - might not make sense, whereas adding three would, he said. "I think Terry Gilliam has done a really good job of rethinking his film to keep the footage that is already shot with [Ledger]," Shaw said. (Canada.com)
Cinematic Sondheim Dec 24, 2007
Sondheim was clapper boy on "Beat the Devil," John Huston's 1953 spoof of the caper movie. Twenty years later he and Anthony Perkins collaborated on the screenplay for a mystery, "The Last of Sheila." He is nothing if not a man of many talents. (Boston Globe)
Obituary: Peter Viertel Nov 7, 2007
Two further collaborations with Huston followed, The African Queen and Beat the Devil (1954), the spontaneous feeling of which might have derived from the fact that Huston, Truman Capote and Viertel (uncredited) wrote the script 12 hours before each day's shooting. There were also two fairly faithful Hemingway adaptations, Henry King's The Sun Also Rises (1957), an all-star production headed by Ava Gardner and Tyrone Power, and The Old Man and the Sea (1958), featuring Spencer Tracy. Yankees routed by Orioles Aug 15, 2007
The loss, which snapped New York's four-game winning streak, stung a little bit more because Boston came back to beat the Devil Rays, 2-1, on Tuesday to gain ground on the Yankees and spread the gap in the American League East to five games. With this game behind them and Wednesday's rubber match in front of them, Torre said the Yankees can't look back. (MLB.com -- NY Yankees Yankees)
Gore Daughter: '08 Run Not Happening... Jul 22, 2007
I think he's a nutcase, but he's the only one alive that can beat the Devil in Drag (Hillary). I'll vote for anybody in any party to prevent evil from running our country. (The Drudge Report)
'Fay Grim' finds Hartley on his game May 18, 2007
Fay Grim is an exotic intriguer that kids itself, its ancestors being The Lady Vanishes and Beat the Devil. Leaning rakishly into the tilted camera angles is the playful genii of Orson Welles' Journey Into Fear, Lady From Shanghai, Mr. Arkadin, even a scene echoing The Trial. (San Diego Union-Tribune)
Shop cashes in on fascination with celebrity bling Apr 12, 2007
Some people like to create gifts sets by pairing a piece in the Hollywood Collection with a copy of the movie in which the original jewel appeared; for instance, a replica of Humphrey Bogart's red garnet and diamond ring worn in the movie Beat the Devil. The shop is filled with the latest trends. (AZCentral -- Business)
