Universities provided the setting for several of his best-known plays, including "Butley," the story of a dyspeptic English professor in meltdown that was turned into a movie starring Alan Bates, and "The Common Pursuit," about the aspirations and disappointments of a group of students working on a literary magazine. In 1995, the West End run of Mr. Gray's play "Cell Mates" was famously curtailed when star Stephen Fry suffered a breakdown and disappeared, turning up days later in Belgium. (Boston Globe)
