The suspense is killing them  May 20, 2007
Fincher's fascination with urban paranoia and dangerous games make him the perfect man for the job; he is the director of one of the most noir of all serial-killer films, Se7en. From Peter Lorre in M through Tony Curtis's Albert DeSalvo in The Boston Strangler and Richard Attenborough's Reginald Christie in 10 Rillington Place to Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal Lecter, the chief roles in such pictures have been the killers. (The Observer)

Zodiac draws a star turn from Downey  May 19, 2007
Director Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) once again demonstrates his visual flair with some brilliantly orchestrated set pieces. The nerve-shredding murder of the teenage lovers in their car at the beginning of the film leads eventually to a horribly tense aerial view of Paul Lee Stine's yellow taxi cab cruising through Presidio Heights en route to its deadly final destination, with Zodiac sitting in the back. (Scotsman)

Sex and the City film now scrapped  May 18, 2007

Partners in crime  May 13, 2007
Then came Se7en (1995), a sleeper hit starring Brad Pitt as a detective investigating a series of murders based on the deadly sins ('I'll talk to any magazine called Seven,' Fincher laughs). The Game, a tricksy mystery, followed two years later, before Fincher struck gold with Fight Club (1999), a dazzling meditation on male aggression, again starring Pitt. (Telegraph.co.uk)

    Jake's progress  May 8, 2007
Gyllenhaal is in London to promote his latest film Zodiac, directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club). (Scotsman)

So who was the Zodiac killer?  Apr 15, 2007
A Hollywood movie, directed by David Fincher who brought the world the horrifying Se7en, has hit cinemas across America: its brutal depictions of the Zodiac's murders show that he still has the power to shock and scare decades later. It has also cast fresh light on a killer who has become a vital part of America's popular mythology. (Guardian Unlimited)

    - Why Cameron is like an Easter egg without any sweets  Apr 2, 2007
It's notoriously tricky to find out much about his past, in the same way that Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt found it tricky to find out much about the serial killer John Doe in the movie Se7en. He'd managed to erase his entire existence, even slicing the skin off his fingers to avoid leaving prints. (Guardian Unlimited)

    Roll over, Wes Craven|  Mar 26, 2007
Heavily influenced by David Finchers 'Se7en', it had a noir-ish quality both in its appearance and in its whodunit structure. Sadly, this original film has itself been franchised, Whannell selling his soul by penning 'Saw 2' and 'Saw 3' both directed by Bousman and currently disgracing our small and big screens respectively. Zodiac’ holds interest, but cheats’ at the puzzle  Mar 23, 2007
It s got exciting, breathless moments of suspense, a talented cast of some of Hollywood s best and brightest, and David Fincher (Se7en), a wonderful visual director who certainly knows how to do a good serial killer movie. But the one thing the movie does not have is caution. (Chippewa Falls Chippewa Herald, WI)

Movie review: ‘Zodiac’ reaches for the stars  Mar 21, 2007
Imagine a very special Unsolved Mysteries segment directed by the guy who made Fight Club and Se7en and you have Zodiac, a new movie that presents the true story of a creepy serial killer who terrorized California in the late 60s and early 70s. After each murder, the killer would leave the cops and the press cryptic defiant messages belittling their efforts to identify him. (Lompoc Record, CA)

The Reel Critic: Zodiac  Mar 15, 2007
Director David Fincher ("Alien," "Se7en," "Fight Club") has crafted another gem, though his style is more muted in his latest crime saga. He uses a very distinct color tone that washes over each scene - his films are pleasing just to look at. (Middlebury College -- The Campus, VT)

    Killer flick?  Mar 11, 2007
Zodiac good, but not superior to Se7en ... Though his movies cover far-ranging subjects from the cult classic Fight Club to Se7en, the movie that turned the serial killer genre on its ear they are all linked by Finchers fascination with the stylish and the morbid ... However, Zodiac is hardly a rehash of Se7en. (Charleston Gazette, WV -- News)

    'Zodiac' (****)  Mar 11, 2007
From the revolutionary serial killer thriller "Se7en" to the mind-game theatrics of "The Game," from the cultural bombshell of "Fight Club" to the technically flawless genre piece "Panic Room," Fincher exudes a confidence in his style that leaves little doubt that he is in complete control of his craft ... Though it doesn't quite approach the level of some of the filmmaker's earlier works (namely "Se7en" and "Fight Club"), Fincher's latest film, "Zodiac," may be his most artistically vital work... (Lodi News Sentinel, CA)

'Zodiac' is darkly evocative re-creation of an era  Mar 9, 2007

Profile: AUTHOR ROBERT GRAYSMITH FOLLOWS THE SIGNS OF ZODIAC  Mar 7, 2007
" The lives that were shattered by this case are the focus of ZODIAC directed by SE7EN David Fincher. Graysmith himself is a main character portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal as an obsessive young cartoonist working at the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE who decides to become amateur sleuth by writing a book on the case in an effort to bring all the information about the case to the general public. The result was ZODIAC a best-selling book that is in its 39th printing and has sold over 400 million copies... (iFMagazine)

    Movie Review (2): Zodiak  Mar 6, 2007
The hard-edged nocturnal dread of David Finchers Se7en is gone in broad, unblinking daylight dread. A stark scene of a young couple stabbed fifteen times, shot from beside them on the ground, as they bathe in gorgeous waning sunshine, is beyond horrifying. (Monsters and Critics.com)

`Zodiac' has all signs of epic-length film  Mar 6, 2007
I just couldn't find a way to dramatically do that,'' said Fincher, whose previous films include Fight Club and Se7en. Sometimes, maybe filmmakers can fall in love with the story they're telling and maybe need to be more diligent in how they're telling it. (Akron Beacon Journal, OH -- Entertainment)

Sign of the times  Mar 6, 2007
The latest crime film from "Se7en" and "Fight Club" director David Fincher sticks as close to the real data as a movie about the never-closed Zodiac Killer case conceivably can. And there is a load of information to process. (Whittier Daily News)

Why did ''Zodiac'' make Beach's Ruffalo nervous?  Mar 5, 2007
Fincher, after all, directed the classic serial-killer movie "Se7en.". Between December 1968 and October 1969, the hooded serial killer called Zodiac terrorized San Francisco, sending threatening letters to newspapers to forecast his next slaughter. (Virginian Pilot)

Films don't provide answers just screams  Mar 4, 2007
That story is told in the docudrama "Zodiac," by the director David Fincher, who once rode the serial-killer gravy train in "Se7en.". What we end up with is an odd Orion's belt of serial killers in various modes expressing various meanings: Hannibal is the most romantic version, with his love of canto and concerto, his knowledge of cooking sherries and Renaissance architecture. (Seattle Times)

    Jake Gyllenhaal  Mar 3, 2007
But Fincher is not really interested in reprising the stomach-churning mayhem of his earlier Se7en. Having established the cold-blooded brutality of his subject, he shifts focus to the newsroom of the San Francisco Chronicle, where an intricate message in code is sent by the killer, seeking publicity and taunting those who would try to outsmart and apprehend him. (The Palm Beach Post)

    Zodiac Review  Mar 3, 2007
"Zodiac", a movie by David Fincher (same person that direct Se7en and Fight Club), who's based on the real serial killer who eluded Northern California police for more than two decades, manages to be an absorbing and fulfilling experience, even if it ends letting you still questioning about some facts. The movies set off with a shocking scene: a young couple is attacked by a gunman, near the town of Vallejo. (Playfuls.com)

Director David Fincher: Beyond The Zodiac, By Kurt Loder  Mar 3, 2007
Man behind 'Se7en'/ 'Fight Club' talks about new film, Eliot Ness, singing totalitarians ... And yet the man behind such vividly distinctive pictures as "Se7en" (1995), "Fight Club" (1999) and "Panic Room" (2002) has surpassed himself on a couple ... This was never intended to be "Se7en." That was a different time and a different place, and it was 15 years ago. (VHI.com -- Music News)

'Zodiac': Out Of The Past, By Kurt Loder  Mar 3, 2007
"Zodiac" bears little resemblance to Fincher's hyper-violent 1995 serial-killer hit "Se7en." This film is more ambitious and far more subtle it's an essay in ambiguity. And while it's a long picture, it doesn't feel long at all. (VHI.com -- Music News)

The Hunt for Zodiac  Mar 3, 2007
Zodiac, a true-crime docudrama from scaremeister David (Se7en) Fincher, is about the manhunt for a killer who raised shivers throughout California from 1969 to 1978. He murdered at least five people and maybe many more. (Time.com)

    Killer instinct  Mar 2, 2007
These same young directors were presumably also weaned on Fincher's "Se7en," that chicly apocalyptic serial killer flick that birthed a generation of amoral and visionless imitators ... "Zodiac" is a kind of corrective remake of "Se7en," a renunciation of that earlier movie's psychotic nihilism. (Boston Globe)

    Building excitement  Mar 2, 2007
Fincher ("Se7en", "Fight Club," "Panic Room") is among a handful of filmmakers under age 45 whose movies film cognoscenti never miss. The operative principle is usually "run, don't walk.". (Buffalo News -- Entertainment)

    It's a long story  Mar 2, 2007
In the last few months, Fincher's somber, much-anticipated drama about the hunt for the self-named Zodiac killer has become something of a hot potato, not for its violence, which was the issue with Fincher's breakthrough film, the much- imitated "Se7en." Nor is it contentious for its dark examination of American culture, as was Fincher's cult classic, "Fight Club." ... " "Nacho Libre," a comedy starring Jack Black as Mexican wrestler, was positioned to be a major summer hit for the studio. It... (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

    Real-life drama  Mar 2, 2007
The story of the killer who terrorized Northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s returns Fincher to the serial-killer genre, which made his reputation in Hollywood with 1995's Se7en ... Although not as graphically violent as Se7en, Zodiac re-creates the grisly murders and chronicles the obsession the slayings created among detectives (played by Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards) and journalists (Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr.). (USA Today -- Life)

Review: Smart thriller  Mar 2, 2007
Masterfully directed by David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club), Zodiac consists of equal parts suspense thriller, police procedural and probing psychological examination. Rather than attempting to explore the deranged mind of the Zodiac killer, it exposes the nature of obsession on the part of those who throw themselves into pursuing him. (USA Today -- Life)

    Length weakens well-acted 'Zodiac'  Mar 2, 2007
In films like "Se7en," and "Panic Room," he sets a scene, sucks you in and shows you that you're in the hands of a visual master. Reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr., left) and political cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) seek clues in a "Zodiac" message. (Indianapolis Star)

Is it over yet? Epic-length 'Zodiac' raises age-old question  Mar 2, 2007
"I would have loved the movie to have been shorter. I just couldn't find a way to dramatically do that," said Fincher, whose previous films include Fight Club and Se7en. "Nobody wants to wear out their welcome, but you want the audience to have a meaningful and varied experience."Sometimes, maybe filmmakers can fall in love with the story they're telling and maybe need to be more diligent in how they're telling it. (The Clarion-Ledger)

Take A Break With New Movies  Mar 2, 2007
Those looking for something with a little more depth may opt instead for the thriller "Zodiac" directed by David Fincher of "Fight Club" and "Se7en" fame. The film is based on the books by Robert Graysmith, surrounding the true events of the serial killer known as "Zodiac," who terrified San Francisco during the 1970s and taunted the police with puzzling messages. (The Daily Campus, CT)

Paramount Pictures Photo  Mar 2, 2007
Director David Fincher ("Se7en," "Fight Club") errs on the side of diligence in chronicling the pursuit of the real-life serial killer who terrorized California from the late 1960s through the 1970s. First-rate cast is led by Jake Gyllenhaal as a political cartoonist-turned-obsessive investigative reporter. (Newsday -- Entertainment)

'Zodiac' is page 1 material  Mar 2, 2007
Take the director of the flashy, atmospheric serial-killer thriller Se7en, lock him in a hotel room where the only thing on TV is old Jack Webb Dragnet re-runs, and Zodiac is the movie he might make ... Director David Fincher leaves behind much of his Fight Club-Se7en bag of tricks in weaving a long, complex narrative that begins with the crimes and the victims. (Seacoast New Hampshire)

    A Killer Obsession  Mar 1, 2007
The "Zodiac" director David Fincher ("Fight Club" and "Se7en" ) recalls sending a copy of the script to Graysmith, "who read it, and said, 'Wow, so that's why my wife left me.' He could finally see himself as he was." Says Fincher, "I don't know if the Zodiac was made for Robert or Robert was made for the Zodiac.". In his books, and in the film, Graysmith identifies who he believes the Zodiac is -- a man named Arthur Leigh Allen. (Washington Post)

Serial killer saga 'Zodiac' is tense, well-acted, but way too long  Mar 1, 2007
In films like "Se7en," "Fight Club" and "Panic Room," he sets a scene, sucks you in and shows you over and over that you're in the hands of a visual master. His abilities have often made him seem like a bit of a showoff ---- which is partly what makes the comparative aesthetic subtlety of "Zodiac" so striking. (North County Times)

Long flicks: To cut or not to cut?  Mar 1, 2007
"I would have loved the movie to have been shorter. I just couldn't find a way to dramatically do that," said Fincher, whose previous films include "Fight Club" and "Se7en." "Nobody wants to wear out their welcome, but you want the audience to have a meaningful and varied experience. Zodiac is a killer thriller  Mar 1, 2007

    Re-creating a monster  Feb 26, 2007
Nearly 40 years after the Bay Area became aware of a psychopathic murderer who sent taunting letters to local newspapers threatening schoolchildren, demanding that people wear buttons with his symbol and identifying himself as "the Zodiac," director David Fincher ("Fight Club," "Se7en") has made what he hopes will be the definitive film on the case. Growing up in San Anselmo, Fincher was haunted by this true-life bogeyman. (San Francisco Chronicle)

The Rage of Aquarius  Feb 25, 2007
Hollywood movies crave resolution no less than homicide detectives do, but Fincher, who played by the rules of the genre in his pitch-black serial-killer hit "Se7en," is after different game here. His movie, based on the two books by Graysmith (he's the main character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal), has its theory about who the killer was, but it's not ultimately about who done it, or why. (Newsweek)

Is it "Seh-seven-en". (VHI.com -- Music News)

Writer Patrick Galloway has a bone to pick with David Fincher's "Se7en," the 1995 serial-killer thriller that critics and audiences greeted as gruesome and viscerally shocking. But Galloway, in his book "Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema From Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand," and in a recent conversation, argues that "Se7en" wimps out in a pivotal scene when Fincher declines to show a severed head in a box ... If "Se7en" had come from Japan, Korea or China, Galloway insists, the filmmaker... (San Francisco Chronicle)

"Phone Booth." "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" "Se7en." "Saw." Most of the fun to be had with "Thr3e" is to spot the movies from which it cribs ... And then there's the needlessly contrived title, which has caused any number of Internet scribes to believe this movie is a prequel to David Fincher's "Se7en." It isn't, but the title does lead to speculation: Would a sequel be titled "Fo4r". (Boston Globe)

'Thr3e' throws in few twists amid familiar plot  Jan 5, 2007
It comes near the end of a film that has spent nearly all of its 105 minutes relentlessly copying such stylish thrillers as "Se7en" and "Saw.". Certainly, Henson must be self-aware enough realize the debt he owes to "Se7en" director David Fincher, at the very least. (Pensacola News Journal)
