You can argue for "Schindler's List" or "Saving Private Ryan" all you want, but this boldly shot, fearlessly made movie by a 27-year-old director working with a great cast (Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw) moves as relentlessly as its villain. Maybe it's a great film because the unreliability of the mechanical shark forced Spielberg to rework some scenes, adding more dialogue and character (the director and company rewrote the script daily, and the troubled production dragged on...
