American Gangster recalls the late 60's drug trade Nov 3, 2007
Most of the time merely being "good," which American Gangster is, would suffice, but with clear Oscar aspirations and names like Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe attached, a more apt description is "not good enough." Based on a true story, the script by Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List) keeps drug kingpin Frank Lucas (Washington) and the cop on his trail, Richie Roberts (Crowe), apart for the bulk of the 157-minute running time. Washington and Crowe an American dream team Nov 2, 2007
The script by Zaillian ( Schindler's List, Awakenings) cuts between the parallel stories of drug kingpin Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) from the late sixties and early seventies and his eventual nemesis, New Jersey legal investigator Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe). Though the film is full of echoes of early-seventies films, from The French Connection to Serpico to Superfly, British director Scott never really captures the greasy, gritty texture of New York of that era.
