Triple threat Dec 29, 2007
Sarah Polley wrote and directed a movie, Away From Her, as if she's been doing it all her life (which isn't that long to begin with, just shy of 29 years), and it turns out to be the very model all first-time filmmakers should study: Adapt a Canadian story (this time by Alice Munro, whose work has never had to define itself as being anything). Use a Newfoundland actor at the peak of his powers, Gordon Pinsent. (Globe and Mail)
Reviewers agree: 'No Country for Old Men' best film of 2007 Dec 29, 2007
"Away From Her" Speaking of darlings, beloved indie actress Sarah Polley makes one of the most impressive behind-the-camera transitions ever, while the hermitic Julie Christie comes out of seclusion for a role that could bring her a second Academy Award to go with the trophy she won 42 years ago for "Darling." Christie, co-star Gordon Pinsent and director Polley have crafted a gem of outer stillness and inner turmoil as a husband watches the love of his life fade into the oblivion of Alzheimer... That this gut-wrenching drama about Alzheimers and marital love marks the assured directorial debut of 28-year-old actress Sarah Polley is nothing short of flabbergasting. The recycling of tales told Dec 27, 2007
Expanding on a short story by Alice Munro in Away from Her, the twentysomething Sarah Polley took senility as her subject, but leaned gratefully on the wisdom of her elders.
