Movie review: Not much to ‘ho, ho, ho’ about ‘Fred Claus’  Nov 15, 2007
Much of Fred Claus feels borrowed from other movies such as The Santa Clause, parts 1 and 2 (the advanced technology and the reality of other holiday figures, such as the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy), The Year without a Santa Claus (Santa being too ill and incapacitated to make his yearly rounds) and even Miracle on 34th Street (wherein a child led to believe Santa doesn t exist gets proof to the contrary in the form of a specific and somewhat unusual gift). One again, Vince Vaughn plays... (Lompoc Record, CA)

Review: Get Wrapped Up In 'Fred Claus'  Nov 10, 2007
Think Tim Allen in "The Santa Clause" or potty-mouthed Billy Bob Thornton in "Bad Santa.". But "Fred Claus" takes a tired story and puts a new twist on the tale. (Click2Houston, TX)

'Fred Claus' fails to deliver holiday laughs  Nov 9, 2007
But it might have been a better move to edge closer to the quirky comic territory of Bad Santa rather than a redux of The Santa Clause. John Michael Higgins, always so funny in Christopher Guest movies, plays a sweet elf with a crush on Santa's comely assistant (Elizabeth Banks), but his character is one-dimensional. (USA Today -- Life)

    Fred Claus **  Nov 9, 2007
It's also wildly out of place in an otherwise formulaic holiday movie that's so stuffed with Christmas kitsch, clumsy slapstick and forced good cheer, it might as well be The Santa Clause 4. Vaughn plays the title character, the humbug-filled older brother of the one and only Santa (Paul Giamatti, assuming the part that every plus-sized Hollywood actor is forced to play some day). New Santa comin' to town  Nov 7, 2007
But since 1994, comic actor Tim Allen has taken over the reins as the most popular Santa, thanks to his portrayal of everyman Scott Calvin, who is transformed into Santa Claus after accidentally killing St. Nick on Christmas Eve in "The Santa Clause." The yuletide comedy was so well received that it spawned two sequels: "The Santa Clause 2" (2002) and "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" (2006). . (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

Which on-screen Santa gets you in the holiday spirit?  Nov 7, 2007
Tim Allen in The Santa Clause (1994)The amiable comic is a hapless divorced dad who accidentally bumps off Santa and is forced to assume his duties. Larry Carroll, MTV News writer: "The Bourne Ultimatum" ($32 million) "I don't know what is more telling: That it's been six years since the last 'Rush Hour' movie, that a main actress (Roselyn Sanchez) was pulled out of the film during editing, that the plot has still been deemed releasable or that in more than a half-decade I've never once heard someone say, 'I wish they'd make another "Rush Hour" movie!' 'Evan Almighty's' flood of laughs only ankle deep  Jun 29, 2007
If you take out all of the things that Jim Carrey did in the first movie to make it hysterical and add in a teaspoon of morals and mix it together with the plot from "The Santa Clause," you end up with "Evan Almighty.". This is a movie that does not show off the strong points of Steve Carrell's comedy. (Waterloo Courier, IO)

    Evan Almighty  Jun 22, 2007
Although ostensibly plucked from the ribs of "Bruce Almighty," the 2003 comedy hit starring Jim Carrey, "Evan" plays much more like an uncredited sequel to "Oh, God!" garnished with a dollop of "The Santa Clause." The film also reaffirms, for anyone who doubted it, Steve Carell's arrival as a major comedy presence and asset to NBC Universal (featuring him in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and NBC's Emmy-winning "The Office"), and his own appeal surpasses that of the movie itself. Carell -- reprising... (Variety)

    'Evan Almighty' isn't heaven-sent  Jun 22, 2007
Director Tom Shadyac and his screenwriters treat Noah as if he were Santa Claus in The Santa Clause, betting that Carell sprouting facial hair and donning a robe and sandals will amuse the mass audience the way Tim Allen does whenever he grows a gut and a beard. I wasn't a fan of The Santa Clause (and even less a fan of its sequels), but it was Some Like It Hot compared with Evan Almighty. (SunSpot.net)
