One story, thrice May 5, 2006
Unlike many admirers of Irish playwright Friel, we are more drawn to the tough edges of his early work than to such celebrated Chekhovian embraces as "Dancing at Lughnasa." "Faith Healer," which has not been seen on Broadway since Jose Quintero directed James Mason in it 27 years ago, turns out to be more like Beckett than a Gaelic spin on "Rashomon" and "The Rainmaker.". Kent, Fiennes' theater director of choice, allows us to see faces change brutally, as if in unforgiving close-up. (Newsday -- Entertainment)

Kurosawa's films never broke into the best-picture category, though he was nominated for best director with Ran and received an honorary Oscar for 1989. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Animated 'Hoodwinked' is tired, lacking personality Jan 14, 2006
A goof on "Little Red Riding Hood" by way of Agatha Christie and "Rashomon," "Hoodwinked" has a cute premise and even cuter characters, but behind the candy colors and nostalgia-laced animation style is a tired tale that never comes to life. MOVIE REVIEW. (Seattle Post Intelligencer)
MOVIE: Hoodwinked Jan 14, 2006
"Hoodwinked" is an update on the Little Red Riding Hood story - in itself, not a new idea - combining elements of a police procedural with "Rashomon," the classic Akira Kurosawa film that shows the same incident through four sets of eyes. The incident in this case is known to every child: Little Red Riding Hood, basket of goodies in her hand, goes to visit her grandmother. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, VA)
'Hoodwinked' lacks a certain edge Jan 13, 2006
Police chief Grizzly (Xzibit) wants to get to the bottom of it all -- as well as find the ''Goody Bandit" who's been destroying all the sweet shops in town -- and with the help of dapper frog detective Nicky Flippers (David Ogden Stiers), they take depositions from Red, the Wolf, and Granny. We see the story three times in a row, each from a different character's point of view. That's right, it's ''Rashomon" for idiots. There are some cute surprises in the telling -- Granny turns out to be an... (Boston Globe)

It's a slightly slapdash computer-animated cartoon feature that takes the venerable "Riding Hood" and updates and reconfigures it into a sendup of police-procedural mysteries such as "Law and Order" or "NYPD Blue" while adopting (no kidding) the multiple-perspective storytelling strategies of Akira Kurosawa in "Rashomon.". "Hoodwinked" treats "Red Riding Hood" as a detective story we've never really understood until now, with nuttier motivations, more complex characters and a screwier climax. (CTNow.com)
