Modest films, niche marketing reshape box office, Oscars  Feb 22, 2008
For example, Stone says: "If you have a film that Laura Linney (this year a lead-actress nominee for The Savages) thinks she may get an Oscar for, she's going to star in it and it's going to get a lot of money put into it because they think it may go all the way to the Oscars.". She says studios have instituted a deliberate difference between the entertainment they release the rest of the year and the prestige films that compete for the Oscars, with special divisions catering to sophisticated... Predictions: Same 'Old' Oscars  Feb 22, 2008
" Oh, that second, elusive Oscar.Jones' nomination is a surprise, and he'll have to settle for the "I'm just happy to be nominated" mode of thought (plus, he's a previous Oscar winner). Mortensen gives his best performance to date as a Russian mobster, and might actually have had a shot in a Day-Lewis-less year. And as great as Depp is in "Sweeney Todd," and how much he deserves to win, Day-Lewis is, well, a cut above the actor's murderous barber character.Who Will Win: Day-Lewis. He's... The Oscars: Fashion's Fantasy Football  Feb 22, 2008
Clockwise, from left: Oscar-nominated actresses Marion Cotillard, Laura Linney, Cate Blanchett and Ellen Page. OPINION By PHILLIP BLOCH Feb. 22, 2008 Font Size. (ABC News)

Why is Hollywood going for bloke?  Feb 21, 2008
Admittedly, in the best actress category, some genuine "women's films" are in the running: Julie Christie () and Laura Linney (The Savages) are nominated for films by female directors, and Marion Cotillard () owns her starring vehicle like no one else this year except Daniel Day-Lewis. But the less said about Cate Blanchett and the atrocious the better. (Sydney Morning Herald)

HORSE RACE IS ON  Feb 21, 2008
February 21, 2008 -- 'THE THING is to be able to outlast the trends," said Paul Anka. The classic Julie Christie has outlasted all trends. That's one reason she is up for an Oscar for "Away From Her," and worshipped anew by the movie industry in 2008. This is 40-something years after her first big splash in "Billy Liar," back in 1963, and her first Oscar for "Darling" in 1966. Christie is seen to have a lock on that naked little gold guy, but a brilliant dark horse and feisty pony are giving her... (New York Post -- Gossip)

Oscar Analysis: 'No Country' may sweep Oscar wins  Feb 21, 2008
Best Actress in a Leading RoleNominees: Cate Blanchett ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"), Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose"), Laura Linney ("The Savages"), Ellen Page ("Juno"). Out of the movies these actresses are nominated for, the one most likely to have been seen by many college students is "Juno." Don't get me wrong; Page's acting and the quirky comedy-drama are charming and witty, if a little superficial. (Northeastern News, MA)

    Oscar analysis  Feb 20, 2008
ZH: I'd put it between Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Laura Linney (The Savages). Thomas Floyd: As much as I loved Ellen Page's performance in Juno and I would say it's among the best three of the year with her, Cotillard and Julie Christie (Away From Her), I actually think her role might not have enough heavy material to get the win.
