Film critic loses cancer battle  Sep 7, 2007
" Not that Muller was a strict populist. His three favorite movies of all time were Dr. Strangelove, Young Frankenstein and Full Metal Jacket. And his appraisals of serious motion pictures and trends conveyed depth and sensitivity. "In the '70s, even horror movies had something to say," he wrote in 2004. 'Halloween' is one twisted remake  Sep 2, 2007
Even with a solid effort, such as the recent "Dawn of the Dead" update, half the horror-film fan base is still going to arrive at your doorstep armed with pitchforks and torches. Which makes Rob Zombie the perfect person to attempt a remake of John Carpenter's 1978 horror film "Halloween." Zombie's uniquely twisted style ensures that any film he writes and directs will have something new to offer. (San Francisco Chronicle)

No horror story for studio genre labels  Jul 28, 2007

For every recent midrange hit like "28 Days Later" or "300" director Zack Snyder's remake of undead master George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," there have been box-office disappointments such as Romero's own "Land of the Dead," the hilarious English satire "Shaun of the Dead" and "Planet Terror," Robert Rodriguez's half of the "Grindhouse" double feature. Pretty actresses -- a fitting description of the petite 28-year-old blond star of "Go" and "Dawn of the Dead'' -- routinely smile for the camera. What makes Polley's long day in la-la land noteworthy is that she hates this sort of thing. Her dread of celebrity life led her to bow out of "Almost Famous" three months into rehearsals in 1999. "It's a horror flick, the first time I ever got a chance to really get out there and be a part of some grimy, gruelly stuff." Cannon's flick is a quasi-sequel to "300" director Zack Snyder's 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" remake, unofficially following its events and even casting "Dawn" star Ving Rhames but in an entirely different role. "It's a George A. Romero remake," Cannon explained of the links between the films. (VHI.com -- Music News)

    Cool 2 Know: Creating '300' as a live-action graphic novel  Mar 21, 2007
At worst, as far as the studio was concerned, Snyder, whose first film was "Dawn of the Dead," might have pulled off a passable hybrid of "Troy" and "Sin City," which both performed solidly at the box office. But "300," which is in regular theaters and in Imax, seems to defy the conventions of stiff and airless bluescreen movies in which muted performances belie pretend environments. '300' mixed messages  Mar 20, 2007
A commercial director before making "Dawn of the Dead," his job is to sell and what's better for business than the appearance of reality with the tedious connections to reality removed. "300" straddles more lines than SUVs packing a mall parking structure. (Los Angeles Times)

    Uncivil Marriages:  Mar 20, 2007

'300's' payoff reps tech triumph  Mar 18, 2007
When commercials director Snyder ("Dawn of the Dead") saw the highly stylized 2005 "Sin City," he figured he could use the same technique to translate Miller's graphic novel "300." After he wowed Warner Bros. with a 90-second demo, he was able to seize the reins and make the epic movie about the Battle of Thermopylae on a modest scale. (Variety)

Movie review: Even with flaws, ‘300’ is fun  Mar 15, 2007
Director Zack Snyder, who helmed 2004 s Dawn of the Dead, brings an audacious visual panache to the proceedings, but the film lacks the richness and depth that can come through quality scripting and fully developed characters. The cinematography of 300, however, is nice to look at, with graininess and sepia tones all compensating for the artificiality of the film s computer generated trickery. (Lompoc Record, CA)

    IGN Movies Mailbag: 3/13/07  Mar 14, 2007
I loved Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the dead. How did both of these guys bring me armless whores, guys who think that leather speedos qualify as armor, and the silliest and least impressive Persian army since well. (IGN FilmForce)

    Movie Reviews  Mar 14, 2007
It's directed by Zack Snyder, whose only major previous credit is the remake of George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." Perhaps just as important to the film's concept is the source material: a graphic novel by Frank Miller, whose work was also the basis of 2005's "Sin City." From what little I've seen of the novel, it seems Snyder stayed as true as he could to the source. Visually, this is a good thing. (University News, MO)

There will be blood.  Mar 12, 2007
The film has some stunning sights, and director Zack Snyder, who previously made the rather good "Dawn of the Dead" remake, does an epic slow-mo. What I would have appreciated is a few less deformed lesbians and a little more about the intricacies of these people's world. (Michigan Daily)
