The Newton Ward 7 Democratic Committee will host a candidate forum for the contested races for Ward 7 Alderman at Large and Ward 7 School Committee on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 4-6 p.m. at the home of Laurie and Paul Gershkowitz, 50 Green Park (off Waverley Avenue). Candidates Ruthanne Fuller, Sydra Schnipper and Jeff Seideman, who are running citywide for Ward 7 Alderman-at-Large, and Sue Flicop and Matt Hills, who are running citywide for Ward 7 School Committee member, have agreed to participate. The five well-funded Liberals on Waverley Council are not too impressed with Malcolm Turnbull urging donations reform, judging by their performance on Tuesday. A Greens councillor, Prue Cancian, tabled a motion congratulating Turnbull, the area's federal MP, on his statements that campaign contributions should be capped and restricted to individuals. One of the most dramatic falls is in Waverley, where rates in the council area - which takes in Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches - fell from more than half of revenue (55 per cent) in 1997-98 to less than a third (29 per cent) in 2007-08. The Mayor of Waverley, Sally Betts, said rate-pegging, where the State Government limits the amount by which councils can increase their annual rates, had forced councils to search for money elsewhere.
