Protest in the park was sickening sight Nov 25, 2008
To see that was sickening enough to make me think of performing an act of what Henry David Thoreau in 1849 called Civil Disobedience. While I agree with the protesters right to voice their opinions, I strongly disagree with giving them as a venue the park named for the very people these protesters so vehemently accuse, revile and despise. * Taiwanese need to bone up on their Thoreau Oct 31, 2008
When 600,000 people gathered along Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei to vent their anger at the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou (^E) and flashed a laser image onto the Presidential Office building that read incompetent, I recalled US author Henry David Thoreau, who said in his essay Civil Disobedience, published in 1849, that all men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government, when its tyranny or its... Respect conscience as a moral guide Sep 5, 2008
Thoreau, in "Civil Disobedience," said, "Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward.". And he argued that although I am under no obligation to try to fix all injustices, I am under something like an absolute obligation to not push forward things that I regard as unjust, to not participate in things I regard as wrong or gratuitously hurtful. Granny Did Not Get Run Over by a Tank Apr 6, 2008
This is the chance to do what Henry David Thoreau did by his act of civil disobedience, which gave him a night in the jail and a good meal. Many a freshman has been inspired by reading his essay on civil disobedience, especially under the tutelage of a radical professor who forgets to mention that only under a civil government is civil disobedience possible ... I think these grannies were taught the same things about civil disobedience during their teach-ins on campus. (Townhall.com)

While Thoreau is mostly known for titles such as "Walden, or Life in the Woods" and "On Civil Disobedience," his main output as a writer and the source material for his many books was his journal. Paying taxes, a la carte Jul 17, 2007
This is typically framed as an act of civil disobedience, not unlike Henry David Thoreau s one-night stand in the Walden jail for refusing to pay a poll tax because of his opposition to the Mexican-American War. Thoreau got a lot of mileage out of his brief incarceration, which inspired an essay later embraced by the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi. It means we must abandon the methods of civil disobedience, non-cooperation and satyagraha ... When you attempt to alter the workings of the system by means of violence or civil disobedience, this, it seems to me, can have only one of two implications: either you do not believe in democracy at all and consider that society ought to be governed by enlightened minorities such as the one to which you, of course, belong; or you consider that the present system is so imperfect that it is not truly...
