Lamb's version of 'Ideal Husband' is nearly that Oct 16, 2007
Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband, now in an engaging though uneven production at Lamb's Players, has new relevance during our new Gilded Age ... The play's moral core is thus thoughtful and serious, but this is Wilde, after all, and other facets of An Ideal Husband possess his usual comic dazzle. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Always comfortable in costume, in 1999, she followed Elizabeth with The Talented Mr. Ripley and an adaptation of Oscar Wilde s An Ideal Husband. From Italy-bound American, circa 1950s, to a duped Victorian wife she also starred in the contemporary comedy Pushing Tin that year Blanchett has revealed a timeless, borderless acting ability. The cast got all dressed up in period costumes, acted out the plot of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband without bumping into furniture or fumbling lines, got their laughs and, presumably, paycheques, and called it a day ... Still, there are enough social and political overtones in An Ideal Husband (1895) to give play and playwright a new lease on stage life for a skeptic like myself. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)
Lush Romanticism triumphs in two Bard operas Aug 4, 2007
The 19th-century poet, dramatist and wit once quipped, "The first duty in life is to assume a pose." In this vein, Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray comes readily to mind, as does An Ideal Husband. But Wilde also explored these themes in the dramatic fragment A Florentine Tragedy and the novella The Birthday of the Infanta. (Hillsdale Independent, NY)

* 'A Good Woman' fails to transcend even barbarism May 4, 2007
The solid performances of Wilkinson, Moore and the supporting British cast notwithstanding, the movie is so flat that it almost makes you grateful for Oliver Parker's recent flawed screen adaptations of Wilde, An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest. Those films also played fast and loose with Wilde (Earnest, which verged on farce, brought in gimmicks like helium balloons and found Reese Witherspoon struggling to appear authentically English), but nothing like this. " He has played it straight in such films as "Dance With a Stranger" and two Oscar Wilde movies, "An Ideal Husband" and "The Importance of Being Earnest. " (He also had a funny supporting turn in "Stage Beauty," as a wacky King Charles II.) In his life story, however, Mr. Everett doesn't give us too much detail about his attachments to men. Vatican embraces Wilde Jan 5, 2007
Father Sapienza said that Wilde had been a great writer of powerful force and dazzling intelligence who was now chiefly remembered not for his promiscuity but for plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband as well as moral tales such as The Picture of Dorian Gray, in which a vain young man pays a terrible price for selling his soul to gain eternal youth. Father Sapienza said that he wanted to stimulate a reawakening in certain Catholic circles. (TimesOnline)
