    This mockingbird acted like the "dog in the manger" of Aesop's Fables. In spring, I noticed two mockingbirds hanging around the pyracantha bush, and now at least one was eating the berries. (Williston Pioneer, FL)

    Wills, who lives in Melbourne, says he was inspired by a 16th century Flemish etching by Marcus Gheeraerts the elder, an engraver, illustrator and painter best remembered as the illustrator of the 1567 edition of Aesop's fables, and chose Melbourne-based sculptor Paul Juraszek as his subject. The winning choice may add another chapter of controversy to the Archibald, which stretches back to 1943 when William Dobell's winning portrait of artist Joshua Smith was labeled ``a distorted'' caricature by two members of the Royal Art Society who took legal action to have the prize revoked.
