High School Musical 3 Re...  Nov 7, 2008
High School Musical has a good amount of high energy ensemble songs that lend themselves well to dances, but it also has a lot of ballads and, like, three different soulful Gabriella songs about her leaving, or saying goodbye, or breaking up. Overall the game is a fairly solid music game for kids. (IGN PC Games)

For the Record  Nov 6, 2008
Although a solid first attempt, Songs for Polar Bears was too rough around the edges in typical Gavin Rossdale, nineties-style and only with 2004's Final Straw did the band hit its stride with a combination of echoed distortion and stadium rock ballads. And while Final Straw was admittedly repetitive and Eyes Open hampered by structured hooks, you could at least appreciate the earnest evolution that is achingly absent from A Hundred Million Suns. (Middlebury College -- The Campus, VT)

    Ladies! I Can't Hear You! No, Really, I Can't Hear You!  Nov 6, 2008
As her star has risen in Hollywood, onetime collaborators Monie Love and KRS-One have given way to Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, and her most recent LPs have consisted of jazz standards and classy throwback ballads. The hip-hop world spins quickly, and you wonder whether she can avoid disappearing with a quick, irrelevant fizzle upon re-entry. (Slate)

    11/9: Mudvayne  Nov 5, 2008
What seals the deal, though, is the chorus hook Gray sputters about how we should "GO!" and be "so (expletive) determined." Sure, they get more mileage from their brooding post-Staind ballads, but Determined should have been their calling card. Few bands could hope to make what is, at heart, a self-help anthem sound so (expletive) determined. (AZCentral -- Entertainment)

Above the Ground: Burton Cummings  Nov 5, 2008
Meanwhile, the effortlessly pretty "Any Minor Miracle" and "Invisible" sit at the top of a large heap of ruminative, taking-stock ballads (including "Kurt's Song," written for late Guess Who guitarist Kurt Winter) that find Cummings mulling his 61 years with honesty and good humour. He's in good voice throughout and Above the Ground is generous enough with its melodies that one only really feels the album's 75-minute length during the second half, when a glut of slower, breezier numbers begins... Rock Hard, Ballad Softly  Nov 4, 2008
"Our specialty is probably ballads," admits Austin Winkler, vocalist for the triple-platinum Oklahoma band ... "The thing is, we write from real experiences, and it just so happens to be in the ballads that the real experiences shine through a little bit more than in the rock tracks." (However, he's keen to point out that the band is fully capable of writing "kick-ass rock songs," too. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

Janet Jackson's high-gloss pop, with staying power  Nov 4, 2008
There were minisets of keyboard-driven funk like "Nasty," of creamy ballads like "Again," of upbeat pop like "Escapade," of hip-hop-tinged R&B like "Got Til It's Gone" (with Q-Tip rapping on the video screen) and of guitar-driven rock like "Black Cat." She had a costume for each one and endless variations of her familiar angular stop-and-start dance moves; the men in her troupe spun through gymnastics or groveled at her feet. Her long set piece was the title song of "Discipline." A man taken... (International Herald Tribune -- Arts)

Pittsburgh Opera Presents The Grapes of Wrath:  Nov 4, 2008
Gershwinesque song-and-dance numbers, a few sweetly soaring love songs in the manner of Jerome Kern, banjo-twanging ballads, saxed-up jazz choruses, even a barbershop quartet. Yet, with a slyness worthy of Weill, Gordon wields his hummable tunes to critical effect. (Yahoo! Wire -- Entertainment News)

Daring to storm the heavens  Nov 3, 2008

Reba, Kelly mesh talent at concert  Nov 3, 2008
Ballads are Reba's native territory, and she certainly made an impression with her heartfelt performances of "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" and "The Greatest Man I Never Knew.". (San Francisco Chronicle -- Technology)

    * Drifting cowboy  Nov 3, 2008
We hear him not only exulting in the pleasures of making music, but also clowning with his band and crooning old hymns like Softly and Tenderly and Victorian parlor ballads like The Blind Childs Prayer. What the Mothers Best Flour shows reveal is that Hank was a fully fleshed-out man, with a silly sense of humor, deep religious faith and a sentimental side that comes off as borderline cheesy today, said Brenda Colladay, curator of the Grand Ole Opry Museum in Nashville. (Taipei Times, Taiwan -- World)

Homegrown darling leaves listeners charmed  Nov 3, 2008
Alternating at Massey Hall between affecting ballads ( The Park, The Water), bossa nova pop ( Gatekeeper, I'm Sorry) indie-rocked romps ( I Feel it All, Past in Present) and bopping hits ( Mushaboom, 1234), the singer, with her versatile four-piece band, displayed all the range and whimsical spirit that catapulted her to big-stage critical and commercial success. If the market wants more romance then there will be more romantic songs and ballads despite the poor and terrible situations and conditions going on right under our noses. Made in Jamaica: A look at music born though turmoil  Nov 1, 2008
Beautifully shot and mixed, Laperrousaz successfully juxtaposes the mayhem that is dancehall, a kind of amped-up and krunk-ified reggae, with the spiritual, socially conscious ballads of a Toots or a Bunny Wailer, while trying to answer how an island of three million ended up making some of the most influential music in the world. Dancehall is the reggae of the 21st century and you can find its rhythms in any Top-10 pop list in North America. (Toronto Star)

Listen Up: A labyrinth of emotions within Pink's 'Funhouse'  Oct 28, 2008
The barn-burners are more fun than the ballads, but her tenderness is disarmingly sincere; she even thanks her ex in the liner notes. Certainly, one never doubts that this maverick is shooting straight from the hip. (USA Today -- Life)

    10 hot discs  Oct 28, 2008
The rest of Pink's fifth album similarly fails to fulfill its promise, wallowing in the dreary ballads that have never been the singer's strong suit ( Please Don't Leave Me is the only weeper that works). Joshua Ostroff. (Globe and Mail -- Entertainment)

CD reviews: Queen emerges again, John Legend and Pink falter  Oct 28, 2008
While there are more slow songs than anticipated, there are more than enough arena-ready ballads and rockers, such as "We Believe" and "C-Lebrity," to balance out the more mellow moments, highlighted by more acoustic-based tracks like "Small." ... Legend has regrettably traded in his signature soulful vocals and powerful piano ballads in favor of a slick and glossy studio sound ... The ballads "Glitter in the Air" and "Crystal Ball" explore her softer side, which ultimately proves to be shallow... (Daily Iowan, IA)

Boz Scaggs hit the books to take a jazz turn  Oct 28, 2008
Because most of the songs on the new CD are ballads, "we gotta give the show a little juice. It's gotta have some energy," Scaggs says. He's sitting in his South of Market studio, wearing a white dress shirt, black trousers and a very trim goatee. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Setting Herself Apart  Oct 28, 2008
It's a heartfelt yet upbeat dozen-song disc that demonstrates Pink's stylistic range, from ballads to rockers to hip-hop - and a couple of tunes that sound suspiciously like country. And she flips from one style to another with the coc 00004000 ky ease and assurance of a female Kid Rock - a fantastic effort heightened by emotional delivery and catchy melodies. (New York Post -- Entertainment)

High School Musical 3: Songs we've heard before  Oct 27, 2008
His girlfriend, Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens, who routinely gets stuck with the adult-contemporary ballads, to suit her blandly sweet nature), meanwhile, is headed to Stanford. Before any of that, though, we have a senior-year show to put on, of course, as well as the prom. (Daily Iowan, IA)

The Jazz Singer  Oct 27, 2008
Its soundscapes superbly insulate James' baritone, which he enlivens with a conversational, behind-the-beat phrasing that's rhythmically agile to tackle tricky verses geared more toward a rapper, and lyrical enough to handle slow, sensual ballads. Unlike most mainstream jazz vocals discs, The Dreamer steers clear of the classic American songbook. (Slate)

Take a look at part C: "The Clash of Empires" with two historically significant ballads: "General John" (that would be Forbes) and "The Pennsylvania Line (War of 1812)." Stirring songs, but anthems for Pittsburgh. Probably not. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)

    Kellie Pickler  Oct 25, 2008
The album splits its tracks squarely into two camps: sappy ballads and strained radio jingles. Neither category seems to produce emotion or energy for the listener, or even for the artist herself. (Yale Herald, CT)

'High School Musical 3' revels in youthful exuberance  Oct 24, 2008
The style of the songs (which are catchy, then quickly forgettable) varies between rock-lite, hip-hop-lite and generic pop ballads. Troy (Zac Efron) leads East High School's basketball team to a championship victory, as he and his teammates sing, dance and shoot hoops. (USA Today -- Life)

Beyonce Album Preview: I Am ... Sasha Fierce Shines Light On B's Alter Ego  Oct 24, 2008
" But Beyonc? may have integrated these sides of herself far more than she realizes, for the I Am ... portion of her album is actually the more daring side, since it requires more bravery to step outside what she's known for uptempo top-40 R12; and try for a more timeless sound in a classic sense (perhaps the influence of playing ?). And Sasha Fierce, fun though it might be, is mostly familiar-sounding dance tracks and doesn't stretch Beyonc? as an artist the way I Am ... does. "If I Were a Boy"... (VHI.com -- Music News)

Metallica thrashes Glendale  Oct 23, 2008
The band got as close as it can to slower power ballads with a sleek take on 1996's Until It Sleeps and 1991's Nothing Else Matters, which also included sweet dueling guitars. But the quiet moments were rare, and the crowd roared as Hetfield jumped into the title track of 1986's Master of Puppets, a thrash-heavy album that predated Metallica's move into the mainstream. 'You're Not Alone' by Saosin  Oct 21, 2008
A lot of bands mine the '80s for guitar tones and synth sounds these days, but few manage to capture the self-empowering, completely unironic innocence of arena-ready power ballads. This may be the cheesiest song we've heard all year, but we can't stop playing it. (Boston Globe)

New releases: McLachlan, Talbot, Harmonious Wail  Oct 18, 2008
The penetrating slow-burner "Possession" and peppier "Sweet Surrender" are two superb songs about obsession, and of course there are all those poignant ballads like "Angel," "Adia," "Hold On," "Good Enough" and a live version of "I Will Remember You" - songs that can give you a good cry without making you feel manipulated by cliches. Still, though "Closer" may earn McLachlan a little scratch for Christmas, she's going to have to make more of an effort to stay relevant. (Scripps Howard News Wire)

(Montana Standard, MT)

Mixing guitars with soaps  Oct 17, 2008
No one writes ballads nowadays, and the words to rock music are harder to decipher than classical opera, which at least has the excuse of being in Italian or some other non-English language. I was reared on country music; nobody in Tennessee in the 1940s and 1950s escaped the influence of Saturday night and clear channel radio station WSM; Hank Williams, Jimmy Dickens, Roy Acuff, Patsy Cline and the others were all members of our families. (Orangeburg Times and Democrat, SC)

    * [CD REVIEWS] Taiwan  Oct 15, 2008
Fan is firmly set in the Mando-pop mainstream of adolescent love ballads that play out every variation of the I love you, you love me theme ... Other love ballads on the album dont quite plumb the same depths, and the production quality ensures that nothing grates the nerves, but the lack of invention means that despite all the hype of Cape No. 7, Fan has so far failed to hit the number one spot in the charts, coming in at No. 11 and mostly inhabiting the lower half of the top 10 for the... Watch Me Disappear  Oct 10, 2008
It has ballads of sentiment but no sentimentality, wholly convincing melodies and a 1970s tone. I don't mean punk, prog or disco but the blend of blue-eyed soul, relaxed tunes and subtle rhythm that marked, say, Fleetwood Mac at their best or, more recently, Crowded House (as captured, beautifully, in Lupus, which could well have come from the Finn brothers' best moment together, Woodface). (Sydney Morning Herald -- Entertainment)

Diana Krall puts on an enjoyable show  Oct 7, 2008
Entertain she did, as she alternated between emotional ballads and foot-tapping ditties while engaging in banter that was both charming and friendly. In fact, most of the personable parts of the concert came when she wasnt singing whether it was swearing aloud when she made a mistake, winning Malaysian brownie points by mentioning the chicken wings at Jalan Alor in KL, or chatting proudly about her two-year-old twin sons Dexter and Frank. Fist-pumping rock 'n roll anthems are sandwiched between ballads and psychedelic jam sessions. Such combinations make otherwise enjoyable songs irritating, and the album becomes very difficult to listen to in its entirety. (Daily Orange, NY)

    Irish intensity  Oct 6, 2008
Tonight's Celtic Thunder show at the Agganis Arena offers a wide variety of pop with a bit of an Irish accent, from acoustic ballads to dramatic operatic tunes, sung by a cast of five ranging from 14-year-old Damian McGinty from County Derry to 40-year-old Glasgow native George Donaldson. All the bases are covered, from the young heartthrob with an acoustic guitar (Keith Harkin) to Dublin-born tenor Paul Byron. (Boston Globe)

T.I., Robin Thicke have new CDs  Oct 6, 2008
Long on breathy sensitive-male ballads about how he understands your hopes and shares your desires, Something Else picks up right where Thicke left off with the last albums hit single, Lost Without U. Given his weakness for bongos and syrupy strings, the new set isnt without a whiff of schmaltz; more than once youll think hes about to cover Take My Breath Away. Fortunately, Thickes strong singing and a few winning uptempo numbers, including the infectious... (MSNBC -- Music)

Young soldier comes home safe  Oct 6, 2008
To the tune of classic rock ballads and the comforting aroma of homemade baked ziti, he was welcomed back to home soil with open arms. For 10 months, Jaycox has been embedded at a military outpost in the midst of the hot urban warfare throughout the city of Baghdad. (Catskill Daily Mail, NY)

A Closer look at Sarah McLachlan  Oct 6, 2008
"Listening to the collected history on Closer, you can hear this, too. In those warm, rich ballads such as "Hold On" or "Fallen," there is that obscure character who listeners can become, or live through. The only one who really knows what it took to get to the point is longtime cohort, producer Pierre Marchand. He co-wrote both of the new songs with McLachlan. It was the first time that they've worked in quite that way."His impact has been huge. I worked with him from my second record on and he... (Canada.com)

Jennifer Hudson Escapes 'American Idol' And 'Dreamgirls' Cover Songs On Self-Titled Debut  Oct 6, 2008
Working with everyone from Timbaland to Ne-Yo to Robin Thicke, Hudson wanted to prove that she can handle ballads and more upbeat fare, like her midtempo single "Spotlight.". "So many different people come up to me and say, 'I'm a huge fan,' and I say, 'Oh my God, what am I going to h 00004000 ave for everyone [on the album]?' " Hudson said. (VHI.com -- Music News)

Journey thrills fans  Oct 5, 2008
The show dipped in voltage from there for a midshow succession of ballads like When You Love a Woman, Faith in the Heartland and After All These Years that were roused largely from speedy, up the neck trills by Schon and some well executed scissor leaps from Pineda, clearly loving his new job. Once these were dispensed with, it was time for the mass sing-along money songs all in rapid succession: Lights (to which Schon, sporting a white Stratocaster, added the riff to The Wind Cries Mary as a... Songs for the road  Oct 5, 2008
For while there is actually something rather prodigious about his musical talent he plays numerous instruments on the album and creates complex, layered melodies it is overlaid by the reedy-voiced depression that makes one of his ballads indistinguishable from the next. Melodramatic love songs (generally of the 'love hurts' rather than 'love triumphs' type) make up the bulk of the album, but there are also two quietly angry protest songs ('St Peter' and 'Requiem') for the politically...
