    Read Chris Wallace's interview  Aug 24, 2009
DUCKWORTH: Well, I have to say, Chris, that this is a really important discussion because when I was in Iraq and I was injured, thank goodness I had an advanced directive, that I had both a living will and a medical power of attorney that my husband was able to use to really execute my wishes. And I don't think that anybody values life more than somebody such as myself or those of us who work at V.A. who've been in combat, who knows what it's like to be given a second choice. (Fox News)

Let's Be Honest About Death Counseling  Aug 23, 2009
It's just that we want the doctors to talk to you about putting in place a living will and other such instruments ... Then consider the actual efficacy of a living will ... You are told constantly how very important it is to write your living will years in advance. (Human Events Online)

Dont let myth derail efforts  Aug 23, 2009
This provision would provide a new optional benefit that would pay doctors for their time if a person on Medicare chose to consult them for information on advance care planning, such as making a living will, appointing a health proxy and hospice care. Such consultations are currently not covered by Medicare. (Bismarck Tribune, ND)

Taking us for a ride on health care (5)  Aug 23, 2009
Section 1233, which Palin claims is the one containing the evil, merely allows doctors to hold voluntary consultations with their patients on such matters as a living will and other advance instructions on the care the patients choose to receive as their inevitable time of death approaches. The section provides Medicare funding if you would like to have your doctor to help you consider such questions as whether you want to be kept alive in a permanent vegetative state. Don't settle for status quo  Aug 22, 2009
Clear instructions should be given so that you, your care and your family do not become a political football, as Terri Schiavo's did when she had no living will. Lying to and scaring our seniors by saying that these discussions mean that our government wishes to end their lives to save money is immoral. (Herald Online, SC -- Opinion)

EDITORIAL: Death Panel hysteria  Aug 22, 2009
Medicare requires hospitals, nursing homes and hospices to tell patients of their right to accept or refuse treatment and to urge them to make a "living will" and designate a proxy to see that it is carried out if they are incapacitated. The New York Times has traced the origins of the "death panel" rumors to the right-wing press, which have been picked up and amplified by assorted right-wing talkers to batter President Obama's planned health-care reforms. He was pretty sure, but not certain, that he'd signed a living will. He was very reluctant to sign an enduring power of attorney to empower me, or my brother, to make decisions about his care and my mom's if he were incapacitated. (Time.com)

    Mind-boggling statement  Aug 21, 2009
Some bipartisan proposals would let Medicare pay for optional living wills. How the far-right nut cases have managed to convince Ms. Palin that filing an already widely used document such as a living will amounts to the establishment of death panels boggles the mind ... I'd rather argue the insanity (and low status) of trying to convince old people that a section of a bill that says basically, IF YOU WANT TO CONSULT WITH A DOCTOR ABOUT YOUR LIVING WILL - YOU CAN DO SO EVERY 5 YRS AND HAVE IT... (Helena Independent Record)

The Health Care Debate the Media Missed  Aug 21, 2009
I looked up that section and it refers to Medicare covering for the first time doctor-patient consultations about end of life planning such as drawing up a living will or planning hospice treatment. It describes "advance care planning," clearly stating (on page 424, lines 21-23) "the term advance care planning' means a consultation between the individual and a practitioner." It is NOT about an interaction between the individual and the government. (CBS News -- Politics)

Study Finds "Death Panels" Improve Mood  Aug 20, 2009
A House proposal allows Medicare to pay doctors to chat with patients, if they desire it, about living wills, hospice and appointing a trusted person to make decisions when the patient is incapacitated ... When my mother died, also from cancer, we were so glad she had been proactive in appointing a medical proxy, writing a living will, and designating someone to have power of attorney. Health Care Reform Should Not Scare Senior Citizens  Aug 20, 2009
These provisions would provide financial reimbursement for voluntary private consultations with your own physician in regard to writing a living will, providing a medical power of attorney and making end-of-life decisions only if you are seeking this kind of advice. Many of us have already done this - it's called planning. (Missourian Publishing, MO)

First, get the facts  Aug 20, 2009

Obama: Some bear false witness on health care  Aug 20, 2009
"That is just an extraordinary lie," he said, adding that it was based on a provision in the House legislation that would allow Medicare to reimburse someone who voluntarily sought counseling on how to set up a living will for the end of life. "It gives an option that people who can afford fancy lawyers already experience," the Harvard-trained lawyer said. (CNN)

Mac Rawson: Common ground on health care  Aug 19, 2009
Isakson apparently realized end-of-life decisions create a great deal of stress on families in sponsoring legislation that would have required new Medicare patients to have a living will or other advance directive ... Living wills are one of the best things seniors, like myself, can do to reduce the stress of the impending death of a loved one. (Athens Banner-Herald)

End-of-life counseling had bipartisan support  Aug 18, 2009
a heart surgeon and a co-sponsor of the counseling bill, says the legislation is aimed at promoting important discussions between doctors and their patients about critical end-of-life issues, such as having a living will. He says those discussions are a "good medical practice," and doctors who spend time counseling their patients about their wishes should be reimbursed through the Medicare system, as the legislation allows. Republican Party using scare tactics  Aug 18, 2009
In all four cases, each loved one had a living will and advance directives that they had discussed with their families and doctors and they passed away on their own terms ... There is language in the reform bill that was drafted by a bipartisan commission along with a Republican physician that in layman's terms states that every five years a person has the right to sit down with their health care provider and discuss advance directives, living will issues, etc. (Yuma Daily Sun, AZ)

Letters to the editor  Aug 18, 2009

Editorial: An issue that can be left out  Aug 18, 2009
The House of Representatives bill includes a provision that simply provides access for seniors who want it to a professional medical counselor who can provide information about hospice care, preparing a living will, providing medical power attorney, and if they request it end of life decisions. These counseling sessions are not mandatory. (Albany Democrat-Herald, OR)

LETTER: Less 'coverage,' more real insurance needed  Aug 17, 2009

Health care reform foes resorting to fear  Aug 17, 2009
It would allow your doctor to regularly consult with you on the need for a living will and advanced care directives, i.e., decide ahead of time if you'd want to be kept alive in a persistent vegetative state. This may or may not be a good idea but it's hardly downright evil and it bears no resemblance to the image Palin conjures: Granny forced to justify her continued existence before a panel of men in black hoods. (Herald Online, SC -- Opinion)

'Death panel' rumors are false  Aug 16, 2009
Surveys show that only 13 percent of Americans have established a living will laying out their desires for treatment near death, and shared it with their medical teams ... Whether ill or not, every American should think ahead about the kind of treatment they want, discuss their desires with their loved ones and their doctors and nurses, and develop living wills to document their wishes. (CNN)

Debate pushed off track  Aug 16, 2009
Opponents of health care reform have taken the sensible suggestion that everyone should have a living will, and turned it into a claim that President Obama wants to kill seniors to control health care costs.
