Joseph M. Carroll, 82; changed schools with 'Copernican Plan' May 30, 2009
In 1969, Dr. Carroll took the schools superintendent's job in Los Alamos, N.M. He discovered bolo ties in New Mexico, and the string tie became his trademark. Dr. Carroll took a job running Florida's Palm Beach County schools in 1972, as race riots erupted over desegregation. (Boston Globe)
