The first day of May commenced National Bike to Work Month, a celebration of spring flowers called Beltane (or May Day) and the American Cancer Society's annual Paint the Town Purple event. Apparently, May Day had its roots in the Celtic celebration of "Beltane," which was loosely a celebration of the start of summer. In early European culture, Feb. 1 was the first day of spring and the summer solstice was called "Midsummer." So, May 1 was considered the first day of summer. (Pine Plains Register Herald, NY)
