Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience Nov 22, 2009
It was Christians who combated the evil of slavery: Papal edicts in the 16th and 17th centuries decried the practice of slavery and first excommunicated anyone involved in the slave trade; evangelical Christians in England, led by John Wesley and William Wilberforce, put an end to the slave trade in that country. Christians under Wilberforce's leadership also formed hundreds of societies for helping the poor, the imprisoned, and child laborers chained to machines. (Newsmax)

Faith and rights Sep 30, 2009
Those Christian social reformers who opposed slavery, such as William Wilberforce or Pope John Paul II, would surely be perplexed by this stance. If a radical statement of the full humanity of every person, simply because they are human, lies at the heart of Jesus' teaching and if he showed a particular concern for the marginalised and the most vulnerable, why then would Christians oppose a legal instrument designed to affirm these truths. One wonders what the grea 00004000 t Christian anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce would make of our society's disdain for the unborn and for our lack of care for women who face unsupported pregnancies. I think he would be perplexed that the human rights gains of the past 200 years still fail the most basic tests of protecting the vulnerable and upholding the right to remain true to one's conscience.
