He really spoke truth to power  Aug 10, 2008
There are many elements, many events, that combined to end the nightmare of Soviet communism, inaugurated by Vladimir Lenin in 1917, to end the regime in which human rights were a fiction and a mockery, cruelty was policy, and absolute power the only real doctrine. But the choice of Alexander Solzhenitsyn to write what he knew, to organize and structure his account (the writer's gift) to produce maximum effect, and to release it to the world regardless of the consequences to himself (some of... China's Zimbabwe gambit is symptomatic of a broader brand of Chinese imperialism that would have Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong turning in their graves. Africa: Barack Obama As the Post Coldwar Dividend  Jul 8, 2008

Colliding memories and memorable cleverness  Apr 16, 2008
Stoppard seized upon the historical coincidence that the Dadaist Tristan Tzara, the Marxist Vladimir Lenin, and the novelist James Joyce all lived in Zurich in 1917 - as did Carr, an obscure British diplomat who appeared in a stage production managed by Joyce and, Stoppard surmises, could have met the others at the Zurich public library. From there he embroiders a couple of hours' worth of theatrical mischief that somehow encompasses Marxism, "Ulysses," English music-hall burlesque, and "The... (Boston Globe)

Actor's accent is on four local plays  Apr 4, 2008
In "Travesties," Stoppard imagines a meeting between writer James Joyce, revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, and Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara, but sets it within the context of a production of "Earnest." The story is told by Henry Carr, a minor diplomat who is remembering (not always accurately) his performance in an "Earnest" directed by Joyce. The play combines witty wordplay with the philosophical and political viewpoints of the three leaders of important movements of their time. (Boston Globe)

Everything Vladimir Lenin could wish he'd had or been. Of course much of this has since - in the jargon of the financial press - been "subject to downward revision"; yet, to this day, insistence on al-Qaeda as a formerly monolithic, then metastasized, demon pathology of epic capacity for terror and evil, has been virtually obligatory throughout the US media: left, right and center.
