The Dos passage  Apr 23, 2006
Dos Passos was first the darling of the left, and then of the right, and eventually of the literary establishment -- he assumed the very chair in the American Academy of Arts and Letters held by Theodore Roosevelt and Willa Cather. If you read "Farewell!" a few times -- and you have to read Dos Passos a few times or you're hopelessly lost -- you won't be able to figure out whether (to use an Iberian device and to look at Dos Passos in the way you might look at Picasso) his blue period had begun... After seeing many, many letters to editors of various newspapers criticizing Mr. Bush or praising him by Democrats and Republicans and praising and criticizing Mr. Clinton, I offer the following quotation from (in my opinion) one of the best presidents we ever had, Theodore Roosevelt. Patriotism means to stand by the country. (The Joplin Globe)

At the opening of the war in Iraq in 2003, VFA 201 was the first tactical reserve squadron to be mobilized and deployed on a carrier, in this case the USS Theodore Roosevelt, since the Korean War. But long before that, the Navy Reserve's combat squadrons were on the chopping block. (Star-Telegram, TX -- News)

How true is that memoir?  Jan 18, 2006
It's important to be clear and upfront with readers, says Patricia O'Toole, author of the 2005 biography "When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt After the White House." "You have to let the reader know what your game is. If you're telling the reader it's the way it really happened, it ought to be the way it really happened.". Frey offers no disclaimer in "A Million Little Pieces," and there's no indication that his publishers wanted one. (Christian Science Monitor)
