The ideal of the heavily decorated stereotypical German (Prussian) soldier is the mentality of a war ready country such as Pre-WWI Germany ... Having had two Knightscross holders (both with a very healthy sense of distaste for Prussia and the Nazi regime) in my family i can attest that for most veterans who have lived through a real war medals are not really that important (one called his tin cross with leaf salad ).
