From the same villa, in another letter, he also defines in a nutshell the later notion of the "picturesque," when he says the view from it "seems to be a painted scene of unusual beauty rather... He became the teacher to such legendary students as Pliny the Younger and Tacitus before being named a consul to Vespasian, which allowed him more monetary resources to devote to the school, from which he finally retired in A.D. 88, during the reign of Domitian (son of Vespasian). Jan. 25, 98: Trajan becomes emperor of Rome and appoints Pliny the Younger to investigate the new superstition of Christianity. Pliny report described Christianity as widespread but harmless, and is most significant in that it is the first recorded recognition of the Christian Church as distinct from the Jewish nation.
