Although he listed his interest as personal, it was another police officer and e-mails soliciting volunteers from Geoff Hubbard, recreation superintendent, that compelled him to start volunteering four years ago. Summer parks and rec programs ready to kick off May 8, 2008

On Oct. 16, community leaders and city officials dedicated the Boundless Playground at Leif Erikson Park, at 1100 31st St., The barrier-free park provides a play area for children with both physical and cognitive disabilities. Starting Monday, city crews will dig dirt to prepare ground in Sioux City's Leif Erikson Park for installation of a barrier-free playground ... The Boundless Playground will be larger than the old play area and will be closer to the park road in the middle of Leif Erikson, at 1100 31st St. The playground will be designed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility guidelines and will follow the standards set by the national Boundless Playground organization, Reinsch-Hahne said. " Leif Erikson was the Viking explorer whom many people credit with being the first European to land in North America, in Newfoundland, possibly as early as 985. Leander's nonprofit foundation is working with the Port of Seattle and the local Scandinavian community in a marina renovation to memorialize Scandinavian immigrants.
