This Day in History May 18, 2008 In 1953, Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier as she piloted a North American F-86 Canadair over Rogers Dry Lake, Calif. Lovelace's Woman in Space Program May 8, 2007 Jacqueline Cochran, the famous pilot, businesswoman, and Lovelace s old friend, joined the project as an advisor and paid all of the women s testing expenses.
