RE by Kay Lazar: It should be noted that the woman featured in the article on vertebroplasty, upon whom so many others may pin their hopes, had a vertebral fracture secondary to spread of cancer to the bone. The medical articles that have stirred the recent controversy about this procedure, on the other hand, only included women who had vertebral fractures secondary to osteoporosis, a thinning of the bone - a different disease process. I BELIEVE that the study mentioned in the article on vertebroplasty misses a significant point ( g, Aug. 24). While pain relief a number of months after the injury may be equivalent using surgery or other means, the ability of an elderly patient to function on his or her own without the surgery should be considered.
