A new combined treatment of biliary cast syndrome  Sep 20, 2008
His postoperative course was complicated by the development of Candida albicans esophagitis, necessitating antifungal therapy and total parenteral nutrition for 15 d. Seven weeks after cholecystectomy he presented with cholangitis and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) demonstrated extrahepatic filling defects. Despite endoscopic extraction of a biliary cast, cholestasis remained unchanged. (EurekAlert!)

Cellvizio Imaging System Improves Bile Duct Cancer Detection According to a New Study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology  Sep 3, 2008
Dr. Meining and his colleagues conducted the 14-patient study to evaluate the ability of the Cellvizio(r) confocal microscopy system to detect neoplasia (an abnormal growth of cells that can be benign, pre-cancer or cancer) in biliary tract tissue by examining tissue at the cellular level during Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a procedure used to diagnose cancer of the bile ducts and pancreas ... The specially designed Cellvizio CholangioFlex Miniprobe enables the... (Primezone Releases)

ASGE issues guidelines on the role of endoscopy in the bariatric surgery patient  Jul 26, 2008
An endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is difficult in patients who had a RYGB, and a magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) should be performed in cases where other noninvasive imaging studies are inconclusive. An ERCP in RYGB patients should be selectively performed. (EurekAlert!)

Oridion Announces Major Medical Research and Congress Presentations  Jun 17, 2008
During Digestive Disease Week (DDW) in San Diego, California, Dr. Vargo, of the Cleveland Clinic, presented a blinded study that analyzed 122 randomized patients and showed that Microstream(R) capnography "significantly reduces the proportion of patients with hypoxemia, major hypoxemia, apnea and oxygen requirements during ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) and EUS (Endoscopic ultrasound). Other studies describing the clinical value of Microstream(R) EtCO2 monitoring were... (PR Newswire)

Multi-Center Patient Registry Supports Safety and Clinical Utility of Boston Scientific's SpyGlass(R) Direct Visualization System  May 21, 2008
The system includes a miniature 6,000-pixel fiber optic probe attached to a camera that provides physicians with a direct view of a patient's bile ducts, overcoming some of the visual challenges of conventional endoscopic retrograde cholangiography procedures (ERCP) ... In addition, Dr. Parsi concluded that the rate of missed stones by an ERCP may be higher than previously reported and more research is required ... An additional subset analysis from the patient registry, led by Douglas Pleskow,... (PR Newswire)

Could Common Pain Killers Have A Role In Cancer Prevention?  May 21, 2008
A Meta-Analysis of Rectal NSAIDs in the Prevention of Post-ERCP Pancreatitis. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a procedure by which a physician can enter through the mouth to perform interventions on the bile ducts and pancreas ... Several studies have investigated ways to prevent pancreatitis following ERCP, predominantly through the use of medications given to the patient at the time of the procedure. (Science Daily)

ASGE issues updated guidelines on antibiotic prophylaxis for gastrointestinal endoscopy  May 14, 2008
Examples of these special situations are prevention of cholangitis after ERCP with incomplete drainage of bile duct obstruction, prevention of pancreatic cyst infection after fine needle aspirate at endoscopic ultrasound or after injection of contrast at ERCP, and prior to placement of a percutaneous feeding tube placement. ASGE Guidelines. (EurekAlert!)

Doctors get real insiders' view now  Sep 9, 2007
Almost half a million people each year in the United States undergo ERCP to diagnose problems in their liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. As part of the traditional ERCP procedure, physicians use an endoscope in order to view the entrance to the biliary tract ... But conventional ERCP is hindered by the flat, two-dimensional black and white images rendered by fluoroscopy, which can make it difficult to determine where to obtain tissue samples and potentially lead to an inaccurate or inconclusive... Pancreatitis  Aug 25, 2007
If there is a suspected gallstone, then a procedure called ERCP can be done. ERCP stands for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, the use of a tube with a camera (endoscope) that goes down the esophagus and reaches the first part of the small intestine where a dye is injected into the bile duct (retrograde) so that an x-ray of the abdomen can show the common bile duct and pancreatic duct (cholangiopancreatography). Anomalous opening of the common bile duct into the duodenal bulb: endoscopic treatment  Jul 5, 2007
We report clinical implications, laboratory and ERCP findings and also therapeutic approaches in 53 cases ... 158 ERCP. The diagnosis was established as an anomalous opening of the common bile duct (CBD) into the duodenal bulb when there is an orifice observed in the bulb with the absence of a papillary structure at its normal localization and when the CBD is visualized by cholangiography through this orifice without evidence of any other opening ... Demographic data and ERCP findings were... (BioMed Central)

Mirizzi syndrome type IV associated with cholecystocolic fistula: a very rare condition- report of a case  May 28, 2007
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) demonstrated the presence of Mirizzi syndrome with cholecystocolic fistula formation ... Appropriate biliary tree imaging with ERCP and MRI/MRCP is essential for the diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome and its complications ... Particularly in our case, ERCP was a valuable diagnostic tool that Mirizzi syndrome type IV and cholecystocolic fistula. (BioMed Central)
