    News and Articles on Dactylitis

Psoriasis and arthritis are they linked?  Aug 10, 2008
Another typical feature of PsA is swelling of the entire toe or digit, called dactylitis, or more colloquially known as sausage toe/finger. Prolonged inflammation and swelling in the joints in PsA will lead to joint deformity and eventually joint damage with consequent disability. (The Star Online, Malaysia)

UT Southwestern researchers investigate predictors for sickle-cell-anemia complications  Feb 29, 2008
The CSSCD criteria, which evaluates patients based on factors such as occurrences of dactylitis a type of painful swelling of the hands and feet in the first year of life, steady-state hemoglobin concentration in the second year of life, and steady-state leukocyte count in the second year of life, was created in hopes that a predictive model would allow early, tailored therapy to prevent adverse outcomes. We found the CSSCD model was not better than random prediction when applied to the... (EurekAlert!)

Phase 3 data show golimumab improved psoriatic arthritis symptoms  Nov 8, 2007
Patients receiving both doses of golimumab also experienced improvements in enthesitis and dactylitis, two common disease manifestations causing pain and swelling. Enthesitis, an inflammation of a tendon, ligament or joint capsule insertion to the bone and dactylitis, a swelling of digits in the hands or feet, are estimated to affect more than one-third of people with psoriatic arthritis ... At baseline, 78 percent (placebo group), 75 percent (golimumab 50 mg group) and 79 percent (golimumab 100... (EurekAlert!)

Early Sickle Cell Complications Don't Predict Later Risk  Feb 13, 2007
Conducted by scientists at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the study also concluded that infants and toddlers with sickle cell disease who have pain episodes or dactylitis -- painful swelling in the feet and hands -- are not at increased risk of suffering those symptoms again later in childhood. However, young children with the disease who are hospitalized for chest problems are more likely to have a recurrence of those problems up to adulthood, the study said. (MEDLINEplus)

Risk For Stroke, Death Not Higher For Sickle Cell Children With Early Complications  Jan 31, 2007
In addition, sickle cell children who have pain episodes ("crises") or dactylitis, a type of painful swelling of the hands and feet, as infants or toddlers are at no greater risk of having those symptoms recur in later childhood ... They initially looked at whether some of the more common problems associated with sickle cell disease -- pain events, dactylitis and acute chest syndrome -- predicted early death or stroke ... The swelling condition dactylitis did not indicate any greater likelihood... (Science Daily)
