    News and Articles on CCL5

Gene variation may raise risk of HIV, study finds  Jul 17, 2008
The protein is called a receptor because it receives signals from a hormone known as CCL5, which is part of the immune system's regulatory system ... Weiss, who wrote the new report with Ahuja and Dolan, showed in laboratory tests that HIV latches onto the receptor in place of its intended guest, the CCL5 hormone ... The Texas-London research team is not certain how lack of the receptor promotes HIV infection, but Ahuja said the red blood cells acted like a sponge for CCL5. (International Herald Tribune)

Stem cells 'prompt cancer spread'  Oct 4, 2007
A chemical called cytokine CCL5, produced by the stem cells, had an effect on breast cancer cells in the laboratory. Medication that blocks the action of this is already used to help patients with HIV - and they suggested it should be tried on patients with spreading cancer. (BBC News -- Health)

Researchers find predictor of mortality in cardiac patients  Feb 21, 2007
In a group of men undergoing coronary angiography, low baseline levels of RANTES (Regulated upon Activation, Normal T-cell Expressed, and Secreted), also known as CCL5, were shown to be an independent predictor of cardiac mortality. RANTES is a chemokine produced by a variety of cell types including blood platelets that has been implicated in atherosclerosis. (EurekAlert!)
