News and Articles on Aspartate aminotransferase

A novel use of Nigella sativa on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury  Sep 20, 2008
Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), total oxidative status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in hepatic tissue were measured. (EurekAlert!)

Early-onset Obesity In Father Linked To Increased Potential For Liver Disease In Child  Apr 4, 2008
Serum ALT and serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were measured on fasting morning samples using standard methodology and were categorized as "elevated" based on traditional cut-off levels: serum ALT and AST e 30 IU/L in men and e 19 IU/L in women. BMI was defined as weight (kilograms) divided by square of the height (meters). (Science Daily)

Elevated Liver Enzymes Associated With Higher Future Mortality  Mar 6, 2008
Liver enzymes include aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and high concentrations in the blood tend to indicate liver disease. About 10 percent of Americans have an elevated liver enzyme with no evidence of a cause such as hepatitis C or excessive alcohol consumption. (Science Daily)

Telbivudine versus Lamivudine in Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B  Dec 20, 2007
Elevated creatine kinase levels were more common in patients who received telbivudine, whereas elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels were more common in those who received lamivudine. Conclusions Among patients with HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis B, the rates of therapeutic and histologic response at 1 year were significantly higher in patients treated with telbivudine than in patients treated with lamivudine. (New England Journal of Medicine)

Bile Acid May Improve Hepatitis C Therapy Response  Dec 13, 2007
ALT, as well as two additional liver enzymes, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), decreased at week 4 and then remained constant during drug administration. Changes in ALT and AST did not differ in the patients who received the two higher doses -- 600 milligrams (mg) or 900 mg -- but GCT was significantly lower in the 900 mg group. (MEDLINEplus)

Playing doctors and nurses  Nov 25, 2007
You send the YorkTest lab a sample of your blood and they test it for the presence of enzymes called alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), high levels of which are associated with liver deterioration. The kit comes in a beautiful cyan blue plastic case. (Guardian Unlimited)
