    The outer bands of hurricane Ike began to pummel Galveston Island on Friday, leading many of those who had planned to ride out the storm to evacuate as surf rose over the 17-foot seawall and flooded the highway escape route into Houston.     As of Friday morning, Hurricane Ike continued to churn northwest, about 200 miles southeast of Galveston Island, with landfall expected near Galveston sometime in the early morning hours Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, Ike has sustained winds of 105 miles per hour and because of the massive size of the storm, the range of hurricane force winds is expected to reach more than 100 miles from the eye.     GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Authorities on Galveston Island along the Texas coast say they received about 100 calls for help throughout the night, but they couldn't respond because of the dangerous hurricane conditions.     The National Weather Service has advised that the eye of Hurricane Ike should make landfall near Galveston Island, Texas between 1:00-2:00 a.m. Saturday.
