News and Articles on Cabin Pressurization

The Warrior: Miguel Torres living his dream as one of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world  Aug 9, 2009
Not 12 hours after leaving the arena, he is on a flight to Mexico City for a PR tour for the WEC. On the plane, four hours of cabin pressurization causes the cut above his eye to swell up like a balloon not exactly the look he s going for when he greets a slew of reporters at the airport. When he returns to the region in mid-April, he s already preparing to train for his next title defense against Brian Bowles. (Orangeburg Times and Democrat, SC)

Plane Vanished in Area Known for Storms  Jun 3, 2009
Forty-five minutes later, and five minutes before the plane was due to make radio contact with air-traffic controllers in Dakar, Senegal, its computers sent a four-minute burst of data via satellite, indicating electrical-systems failures and loss of cabin pressurization. At the time, a line of thunderstorms was moving across the Atlantic between west Africa and northern Brazil. (Fox News)

Ask the pilot  May 1, 2009
It can't be done for the simple reason that the outward-acting force of cabin pressurization won't allow it. In addition to allowing you to breathe, pressurization helps keep aircraft doors firmly in place, much the way water helps keep a drain plug secure. (Salon)

New lab gives Embry-Riddle students real-life experience  Apr 1, 2009
The first of its kind in the United States, the high-tech normobaric lab simulates high altitude conditions to teach students about the symptoms of hypoxia, a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching blood or body tissues which can happen with severe decreases in cabin pressurization. Rather than using the military's hypobaric chamber technology, which reduces air pressure, Embry-Riddle chose to adopt the normobaraic technology, which reduces oxygen content and is less costly.
