    Fame finally takes wing for the WASPs  Oct 10, 2009
    Stationed at 120 air bases across America, the WASP flew every kind of domestic mission and military plane - light trainers, heavy bombers, cargo planes, even the dreaded B-26 Marauder, a twin-engine bomber nicknamed the Widowmaker for its occasional tendency to crash during takeoff. They ferried aircraft across the country, towed targets for gunnery practice, and tested new planes or aircraft that had just been repaired to be sure they were safe for the combat pilots.     Claude Gifford's drive and determination has taken him from 4-H to the U.S. Capitol  Mar 19, 2009
    Gifford s college career was interrupted by his service with the U.S. Army from 1943-45, where he served as a B-26 Marauder pilot and flight instructor in World War II.. After he was discharged, he returned to Iowa where he became a charter member of the Iowa Flying Farmers. (Muscatine Journal, IO)
