You could use perlite, vermiculite, peat moss or sawdust, but I just use slightly moistened, soilless potting medium from my containerized plants. The trick is to keep the dahlia roots from desiccating during the winter, which is why the storing media should be kept slightly damp. (Westerly Sun, RI)
