Phil Brown takes over as the new Johnny Appleseed Aug 15, 2008
Brown said they used to plant ash trees, but have quit doing that due to the Emerald Ash Borer, which is an exotic beetle which eats the cambium between the bark and wood of a tree, eventually killing branches and entire trees. "Twenty percent of urban forest is ash trees. We need to be facing this," he said. (Mid Iowa Enterprise, IA)
Federal Report: Warming = More Harmful Climate Extremes Jun 20, 2008
The Western Pine Beetle also vectors into the tree s cambium layer a blue-stain fungus which grows into the capillary water feeders, thereby blocking the upflow of what little water remains in the tree. This explains the all too common sight of pine trees dying from the top down. (Yahoo News -- Climate Change)
Landscape changes making Calif. fires more intense Jun 17, 2008
Heat kills the cambium, the layer just under the bark that moves nutrients around the tree. Without food, the tree dies. (Scripps Howard News Wire)
The Laurel In Winter Apr 10, 2008
Mice sometimes gnaw to the cambium in young sprouts of Laurel, especially when snow covers other edibles but it doesn t seem to be anyone s preferred food. Many species of birds or mammals value the evergreen leaves as cover in winter however. (Suite101.com)
Vines use trees for their own survival Apr 6, 2008
For example, the strangler fig climbs trees, completely envelops them and slowly strangles them by compressing the cambium (growing layer under the bark) vascular system ... Vines also may hide structural defects that can lead to trunk or limb failure, such as cavities, dead cambium areas, fractures, defective branch attachments or even root failure at the trunk base. (San Francisco Chronicle)
Plant Protection Jan 2, 2008
If you can't tell the difference between dead and live wood, check the cambium layer, underneath the bark. On damaged branches, this layer will be discolored. (Daytona Beach News Journal)
DELTA JOURNAL Dec 17, 2007
Damage to the cambium may yield wood too marred to be of commercial use. The birds repeatedly visit the holes to gather sap and insects that become mired after also being lured by the nutritious fluid. (Nola.com -- Sports)
Don't go out on a limb Dec 14, 2007
Try not to expose any more of the cambium (greenish inner bark) than is necessary, as these fragile layers contain the tree's food and water lifelines between roots and leaves. Resist over-pruning. (Jefferson City News Tribune, MO)
Last chance for liberation Nov 30, 2007
But the tree isn't "repairing" itself when that happens: The choke on the cambium layer under the bark is forever, blocking the traffic of water and nutrients from roots to treetop. So put on your Simon Bolivar hat and take a last stroll with your wire cutters. (Anchorage Daily News)
After burn: Forest does what comes naturally in wake of Meriwether fire Aug 19, 2007
The thick, flaky bark of a ponderosa pine breaks off as it burns, protecting the cambium, which is responsible for the trees' bark and tissue growth ... Douglas fir bark is thick and corklike, insulating the cambium. (Helena Independent Record)
Assault on Mount Helena Aug 12, 2007
Next year, larvae will feed on the cambium, which is responsible for the trees tissue and bark growth. Healthy trees have mechanisms to repel the bugs, but sustained drought has weakened the plants near here, and recent mild winters have allowed beetles numbers to grow. (Helena Independent Record)
Forests threatened by non-native plants, insects, diseases May 21, 2007
The larvae feed in the cambium between the bark and the wood of ash trees, producing galleries that can eventually girdle and kill branches and entire trees. Canopy dieback and damage from woodpeckers feeding on the insect eventually lead to the death of the tree. (Orangeburg Times and Democrat, SC)
CHARLIE LANGFORD: Cold-stressed crape myrtles need drastic attention Apr 20, 2007
Some crape myrtles may have sustained damage to their cambium, a layer of formative cells between the bark and wood. The growth of new wood takes place in the cambium, which is very soft ... The cambium helps move the water from the plant's roots. (Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal)
Oregon Recreation Report Apr 20, 2007
Bears will be active in early April, and will be busy feeding on a variety of food sources, such as skunk cabbage, insects and the cambium (under the bark) layers of younger conifer trees. As with cougar, once bears have been known to occur in certain areas, a predator call is the best bet for getting the animals within range. (Albany Democrat-Herald, OR)
Full Story... Mar 24, 2007
When it's so cold the branches die back to the trunk and the cambium beneath the bark is frozen, the plant ceases to function. Cambium cells move water and food from root to canopy and back down, and when they are frozen there is no hope of recovery. (Appeal Democrat, CA)
Bringing down the ash borer Mar 24, 2007
This is because they can't survive the reduction in their sap flow when the larvae eat tunnels through the thin layer of cambium under the bark, which is the trees' circulatory system. Michigan acted quickly to outlaw the moving of ash logs or firewood from the infested area. (SunSpot.net)
Easy does it when pruning Mar 11, 2007
If the cambium below the bark is green, the tissue is alive, so do not prune. If the cambium is brown or black, the tissue is likely dead and you can prune. (AZCentral -- Home)
Romance blooms at Nipomo's Eufloria Feb 4, 2007
That maximizes the surface area of the cambium layer that draws the water up into your rose. n Mix the package of preservative (usually supplied with the roses) thoroughly with water so the crystals dissolve completely before arranging your flowers. (Santa Maria Times)
Little beetles, big appetites Sep 19, 2006
EAB young, called instar larvae, damage and kill specifically ash trees by feeding on the cambium layer in between the bark and inner wood of the tree. This cuts off the flow of water and minerals to the rest of the tree. (Gaylord Herald Times, MI)
Emerald ash borers found in PG County Aug 28, 2006
Other symptoms include D-shaped exit holes in the bark where adults emerge, vertical splits in the bark and distinct serpentine-shaped tunnels beneath the bark in the cambium, a thin layer that produces new cells. About 293,000 ash trees are in Baltimore, making it the city's most common; the Baltimore metropolitan area has about 6 million trees. (Frederick News-Post)

Floating a Concept May 3, 2006
" Grafting the rib trees to the keel trees created a natural bond. "We pulled them apart far enough to scrape them down to the cambium layer, fit them tightly back together and bound them up," he says. But several of the ribs are lagging behind the others. All the saplings were 30 to 36 inches tall when planted. "We should have put the taller ones here in the middle of the boat because there is so much horizontal run in the middle," he says of the hull. He plans to replace the ones that don't... Care and feeding of lilacs Apr 29, 2006
Mr. Chojnicki doesn't pound the stems, as some do; he uses an electric wire stripper to peel off the cambium, or woody bark, which allows the plant to absorb more water. Others claim that smashing the stems injures the plant's water transport structure and, instead, suggest cutting 2 to 3 inches off of the stems. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)
